Suggestions for the front of my house
Comments (8)Hmmm . . . the first thing I would do is to make the beds a whole lot bigger. My personal guideline is to imagine the front facade of the house falling forward onto the ground and make the beds at least that deep. I would make the beds gently curving to soften the angular lines of the house. I would structure the enlarged beds with the tallest items in the middle, and smaller things on the outside, almost as if it was an island. I suggest this to mirror the assymetrical house design, yet softening it at the same time. The good thing is that making a bed is a lot of work, but relatively cheap, and it brings quick satisfaction. I'd also suggest painting the door, shutters, and garage door a contrasting color (one that ties into the color of the flowers in the bed). That would add excitement, charm, and tie the garden and the house together. (That's also relatively cheap.) Finally, I would make great use of the stairway. Since people are usually looking down when they walk up stairs, let's give them something pretty or cool to look at. Depending on your "funkiness quotient", you could paint funny pictures on the steps or a different word on each step. Maybe the words could spell out your family motto (such as "live well, laugh much, love strong") or create a mood (such as "relax, peace, calm, serene"). I hope this helps!...See MoreMy house is hideous! Suggestions please!
Comments (23)The built-in planter is too narrow for anything but groundcover/annuals. At the corner, I'd add a small tree and circular bed below, in front of the built-in planter, leaving it in place but more or less ignoring it. The bed would also extend in front of the side of house running toward the back yard. If there is not some good looking lawn substitute that is easy to grow, I have no suggestions for the lawn other than what others have recommended insofar as more water. Editing because I forgot to mention ... if you need the yard light, change it to a taller post 10' or more, & upgrade the unit to something better looking. Also, add a beefier masonry cap to the pier. Alternatively, add the beefier cap and change the light to a pathlight (aims down toward the drive, lighting the path but where you don't see the light source ... just the effect.)...See MorePlease help landscape the front of my house....see pictures
Comments (6)OP, I'm glad to see you asked the landscape forum for help here on Houzz. There are quite a few posters in that sub-forum that are very knowledgeable and helpful. As to the house itself: my suggestions would include removal of the shutters on the large triple window on your right as you face the house. That window isn't designed for shutters at all. See this brief article for info: https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/ The other two items I see immediately is the style of your front door. It doesn't enhance your home at all. There are many front doors that would work, but the half moon door doesn't. If you get an appropriate door, paint it an accent color and get a storm door that is all glass with a small trim around that you can paint the same color as the door - or leave white. Consider beefing up your two front posts so they are more substantial looking. Widen your walkway to at least 4 ft wide and have the entry at the steps as wide as the steps. For the style of your front door, see below (door only) or a solid door. For color - consider a navy blue front door or something in the blue family. To me, the colors yellow and blue and green (landscape) are so welcoming....See MorePlease suggest on ideas how to landscape my front yard
