No sealer coat or stain?

All I see are dishouts. Dishouts are caused from using a buffing pad that is too soft for the final sanding. A planetary sander, multidisc or hardplate is preferred for a flat result. Dishouts do contribute to rough spots and dust particles in the finish. The unevenness causes missed spots in sanding and cleaning, leaving rough spots and particles behind.

A water base system will cause raised wood grains also. The raised wood grains would need to be all sanded off for a smooth finish.

Post a close up photo of the problem areas.

@G & S Floor Service I took your information and was able to have them put down another coat after sanding down some problem areas. I forgot to take photos but ill make sure to update once they're complete.

Thanks @Timothy Winzell I should have said I can see some of the wood grain raised up and rough instead of smooth.

If, you want the plastic look use a grain filler. it will take away the grainy look.

If the finisher didn't buff well enough between coats, that can happen. If they buffed too much and exposed any raw wood, it can happen too.

@John Denver how did it turn out? Did you need to do anything special to make the problem go away. I am seeing the same thing after two coats oof Bona Traffic HD, floors is very rough to touch. Trying to figure out if there's anything needed before the third and final coat.

@Timothy Winzell appreciate the quick response. Two coats of Bona Traffic HD, no sealer, on red oak. We plan to do three coats total. A couple of months ago we did 3 coats of the same product without the sealer on the second floor with white oak and the floor is much smoother.

I assume the guy needs to sand it down a little bit before applying the 3rd coat? Suggestions?

Red Oak has more open grain which allows moisture to penetrate and swell the wood fibers. It would make sense that Red Oak is more grainy than White Oak. The floor definitely would be buffed prior to the final coat. It needs to be abraded carefully. You want to get it smooth but avoid exposing fresh wood fibers or leaving swirl marks. Presumably your finisher knows what to do as it wouldn't be much different than what was done on your White Oak.

I just had the same issue. Two coats of Bona HD Satin water based applied on new red oak and ash sanded and refinished. I feel it rough when I pass my hand on the surface what is the final recommendation to get a smooth feel ?

Needs to be buffed and recoated.

Buffed whid P180 or P220 sanding paper

I use 220 grit. If, 180 is used. Becareful not to sand through the finish.
