Combos, Multiples and Seedlings

It's starting to look like peak now, even though a lot of mids haven't started blooming yet. I'll start off with a couple of combos I liked.

I Lava You and Busy Being Fabulous

God Save the Queen and Billy the Kid

Grandma's Smile

Spacecoast Night Vision isn't showing many teeth this year. The first blooms had no edge at all.

Heavenly Snow White - I sold three divisions of this one in the Spring, so my clump isn't as impressive as last year.

Twentieth Century Fox - I know I raved about the branching and bud count on this one. But it does have other problems like the bloom on the right that can't open, bud drop in the heat, and splotchiness in the past few days' heavy dew.

Grace Alone was a bonus from Phil Korth last year. I think I like it better than the two I bought from him.

Warmer Climes was a bonus from Mike Derrow. This is the first time it's bloomed.

And now for a couple of seedlings out of Dearest Valentine

Grandma's Smile x Dearest Valentine #2 - I was anxiously awaitng the opening of this one because it has such good plant habits (fast multiplier, tall scapes, and bud count 29 on the best scape). I don't think it's as pretty as some of my other pink seedlings, but it does glow in the sun.

Busy Being Fab and I Lava You look great together. Twentieth Century Fox looks so pretty though, I would probably look past its flaws.although I REALLY like your 2nd seedling. 1st seedling sounds like a great plant, and is certainly lovely.

I’m loving the second seedling too, the color is scrumptious! Grace Alone is a winner, how lucky that you received that as a bonus. The two combination photos are great! I dont usually have that kind of vision when I place my plants.

Right, I see. You didn't tell us you had no outside garden space originally.The problem is that you have the parsley in with the heat lovers. 80 is OK for germination but the plants need much lower temperatures after that. Your current temps are fine for parsley plants (once hardened off). Mine has been outside all winter and my temps are very similar at the moment. Is there any way you can prick out the parsley into different containers and start hardening them off? Your sun situation, while maybe not ideal, will not faze parsley imo. If you are happy to allow bolting you'll need to keep sowing in succession to provide new plants or you won't have any parsley later in the year.

Yes, I think you are understanding me correctly. Most of the time, I have seen all the whites tied together. For example: with a light/fan combo on three-ways...the power supply (12/2) "enters" at the first box so all the neutrals have to be tied together. At the second box (I try to always do power-switch-switch-fixture to keep it simple), there is only one neutral to the fixture (12/3), so again they all have to be tied together. The question came from a situation where there were two sets of 3-way switches in the same boxes - one for a regular light and one for some can lights. I thought (and your answers seem to confirm) that the neutrals should be kept separated at the second box. Similiarly, should they be separated where there are two 4-way switches in a box (power, switch3, switch4, switch3, fixture)? Thanks!!

I have a very small California yard. I know every inch of it. I rarely let anything go to seed because I don't have the space. I once had that joy of discovering seedlings, and growing plants under a light during winter when I lived in northern chicago area, but that came with snow, so I made the sacrifice and moved out here. Perfect weather for fruits and nuts, but no space. Please keep posting pics of your seedlings and the ones you select to prosper, as I thoroughly enjoy watching the whole process, even though I cannot do it here. Before tc's, seedlings were what made new hostas!! -Babka

Naturally, I am a huge fan of I Lava You and Busy Being Fabulous. and Twentieth Century Foxis red with a white edge; of course I like it..And Grace Alone is just lovely. I do indeed like both of your seedlings.I especially like DEarest Valentine #2.

I really like Busy Being Fabulous and have it on my list.Grace Alone is my pick today. Love the color and form. I do like Phil Korth's daylilies and they've done well for me in the past. I need to go and look that one up. The seedlings continue to "wow" me. You certainly have the right crosses. Lovely.

Both of your Dearest Valentine seedlings are nice, but the second one is my favorite. What color! We got Warmer Climes as a bonus from Mike Derrow last season too. We haven't seen it bloom yet. I don't know which of the named varieties I like best--I Lava You, Heavenly Snow Flake (and I'm not usually a fan of white), Spacecoast Night Vision or Grace Alone.

SC Night Vision has such rich color. Like others I do like the color of that second seedling. Grace Alone is a nce soft color with impressive edge. I am having lots of bud drop now. Some plants are showing significant loss of buds.

And what is your impression of I Lava You now? In a previous post, you were not enthusiastic. Warmer Climes is described by Derrow as a glowing primary yellow color. It will be interesting to see what later blooms are like. I'd say he was quite generous with bonuses for you, as Warmer Climes sold out.

Mantis - I Lava You has always had good performance. It's just not my favorite color (orangey red) and I'm not into extreme pinching of petals. But it's multiplied quickly into a large clump and is very well-budded and well-branched. The clump had five blooms yesterday, but they were not close together. I do love Busy Being Fabulous, but it has very poor plant habit for me. However, the two together look terrific, and I wish BBF were its registered height. It gets a little taller every year. I would highly recommend I Lava You, if you like that color and the shape of the bloom.

Thanks to everyone who commented on the second seedling. I thought it was a pretty one.

Many of you picked Grace Alone as a favorite. I'm pretty impressed with it. It's a dormant, so I'm crossing it with English Lavender and some of my lavender seedlings.

Thank you, woodnative! I'm surprised to be getting such good feedback on that one. Do you look at these on an IPad or an Apple device? Those always add extra red to my photos. To me, that one was pretty, but I wasn't wowed by it.
