Comments (14)I had bad experiences with KD's (most were worst at bath design, but not great at the kitchen either) and finally gave up and designed my own (baths and kitchens). But, when I finally did order cabinets, I did use a fabulous KD who went over my plan with a fine tooth comb. Her knowledge of "what's hot" and what's available far outweighed even months on GW :) She was able to add a couple of my wishes into my design, and tweeked a couple of things for me to cut out most filler pieces. She typically charges for her design work, but didn't charge me because I came with a mostly finished plan, and ordered some high quality (expensive...so she made bucks LOL) cabinets from her. If you like your design, keep it ;) You paid the architect good money for it, but if that architect isn't a Kitchen Certified architecht (most aren't) I'd have a KD look it over for tweeking at the very least. Or go the free route and have us look at it and comment...then take that to a KD :)...See MoreThoughts on this kitchen design please!
Comments (63)Again great questions and suggestions! Wish we would have consulted you all earlier in this process! Guests will use the hall bath just off the back porch. That will be an unoccupied space for at least the near future so will stay presentable. This is why we put a exterior door there and part of the reason the hall extists-to give guest access to that bath. We moved the bedrooms, baths, and closets a million times trying to accomplish the following: all beds with good sized closets, jack and Jill bath bt the kids rooms, guest/MIL suite with hall access to bath, close exit to back of house from bedrooms. We are not fans of hall space either but just could not come up with an option that didn't include one and met all the above criteria. Would LOVE to have that sq FT elsewhere as we are pushing our "limit" on size. Benefitting from this thread, we are essentially redesigning the entire plan lol! So keep the ideas coming! Here is the entire plan showing the back porch area as keywest requested:See above post for revised kitchen with open pantry and improved work triangle! So remaining problems/requests/ideas to address: -eliminating banquette possibly which would require reconfiguring mud entry from back porch -better home management area (computer nook/office space) possibly in mud area, not enclosed space just a tad but bigger then what is currently drawn -ensuring island size is appropriate I am sure there is more......See MoreThoughts on this kitchen design, please?
Comments (14)Thank you so, so much! Buehl - I will read up tonight. Thank you so much for sharing the links (and apologies that I didn't see them before!). Thank you for the note about a prep station. If I put 42 inches of cabinets between the sink and range, I can have 18 inches on the other side of the range. To do this, I'd have to move either the dishwasher or the trash into the island. The aisles are supposed to be 46 inches from the edge of the countertop to countertop but the design software isn't letting me be that precise. A drawing of the first floor is attached. I am moving the kitchen toward the front door 24 inches to have a bigger kitchen. And what they have labeled "dining room" will be more of a library and our dining room will be what is now labeled "family room" along the same side as the kitchen. Practigal - yes, the full length cabinet over the sink is an error. That Ikea software can be so finicky! It will be a 20 incher, not 40. I have been reading about the hood widths. With Ikea's not-at-all-custom sizes, it's a little tricky. I'll continue to consider this though. The island in the drawings is just the bases. The actual countertop will have an overhang to create a seating area. Trash and recycling is in a 24 inch lower cabinet. Currently it is between the sink and range but to create more work space there, it will be moving to either the island behind the sink or where the dishwasher currently is (and the dishwasher would be in the island). Small appliances (stand mixer, blender, Soda Stream and coffee maker) will be on the countertop next to the fridge (towards the corner). The others that I use far less frequently will be in lower cabinets. The fridge will be a countertop depth french door with freezer on the bottom. I put the ikea one in the design as a placeholder. I spoke with the folks at Ikea and there's no issue stacking cabinets. I will have the doors separate as Ikea's boxes can't accommodate a single 60 inch door in lieu of a 20 inch over 40 inch door. I will read up, alter the design and post a revised version in the next day or two. Thank you so much!...See MoreThoughts on this kitchen design?
Comments (13)That would fall within NKBA guidelines (12" landing area on one side of a cooktop, and at least 15" on the other), but it would crowd everything in the corner, and since it would be so crowded, I'll bet a person would be more comfortable prepping to the right of the sink anyway. The fridge could be relocated, as was suggested, but that would block the light from the slider, and kind of block off the kitchen from the dining alcove. Venting to the exterior would not be as easy as it would with the range on the back wall. I'd keep the plan with the range on the back wall, but if you are considering relocating the fridge to the back wall, the clean-up zone and dish storage could go on the shorter wall, so that it's separate from the cooking and prep zones. Primary prep would have the window view, and it would be easy for helpers to load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without entering the cooking aisle. In the following plan, a prep sink could be added to the island, for two independent prep zones, if the in-laws enjoy cooking together.(Not sure if scale is exact--just posting the general idea.)...See Moretedbixby
