Geometric Wizard has some splotchy orange tones today.

Dragon's Orb is a true miniature.

Matthew Kaskel had its ffo today.

Stella's Ruffled Fingers open its first flower today. This one grows like a weed and last year had three sets of scapes.

The seedlings weren't quite as exciting as they were yesterday. Here are a few that caught our eye.

Bob said this one is seedling Queen. It is Stellar Stitchery X Cherry Pie a la Mode. The flower is actually whiter than this picture shows. My new phone takes better pictures in cloudy or shady conditions than my previous phone, but the color is still a bit off. Unfortunately, This three year old daylily is producing terribly short scapes. Still it got a blue ribbon, which means we will move it to the observation bed for further evaluation.

Who would think that Wolverine (pink) and Love All Serve All (rose red) would produce a yellow.

Just on a whim, I crossed Daddy's Heart with I Don't Kid (I do that sometimes). Daddy's Heart is a great grower and a good seed setter and I Don't Kid is a terrible grower. We got a bunch of the the nicest looking plants with good scapes and absolutely boring flowers. This is probably the nicest one of them. The color is more melon, not so yellow. It also got a blue ribbon.

This one comes out of Bob's Fulva lines. This is Fulva 'Korean' X Crimson Stories.

That's all that's noteworthy today.

Matthew Kaskel is my favorite of the registered ones. All the seedlings look good. The seedling queen is probably my favorite. I do love red eyes and edges.

Lined in Lavender is a Luddy Lambertson intro. We went to the Mecca last month and spent a great afternoon with him and his wife, Rachel. He knew all his plants and parentages by name without tags and had a clear vision for his crosses. We were also impressed that he intentionally brings in northern plants, which grow poorly for him, just to keep his genetics balanced and so his plants will grow north or south. I just noticed I had the picture for Forestlake Pleats for Laura in the post twice. I have fixed it now. Kay, I don't remember what the tall orange one is, but I believe Bob has selected it for further evaluation. The bed where Bob is pictured is slated for elimination this fall. We will remove the blue-tagged plants to another bed (if we can find a space) and till this bed under. The new seedlings in 2021 will go there. I am expecting this year to be a low seed year with periods of drought and high heat. That's ok though. Sometimes it gives us a breather. We have enough in the select beds for several years worth of intros.

Julia, Sea of Cinders has not proven to be reliably hardy here. We have lost over winter two plants that were planted in the ground. Luckily for us, Sea of Cinders produced several prolifs the first year it bloomed. Now we now have the potted one and one planted outside in a protected location (on the south side of the garage). Both are doing fine, but we fear a bad winter will kill the one outside. I think it's Bob's absolute favorite daylily but I don't think it is available anywhere. Extreme Tangerine, one of our intros for 2021 is out of it (crossed with Horns, which is hardy here). Extreme Tangerine is more orange than red orange but it seems to be totally hardy. Houzz won't let me post a picture of Extreme Tangerine.

Kate, our highest number was 3400, but that is just too many. We have just under 1200 this year. We have to be careful because we are running out of space. As the years go on, we also need more space for the selected seedlings. I think we have about 600 of them. We really need to downsize the named varieties, and we are working on it slowly. Bob and I have always planted all of our seeds, but we may have to do what some do which is select what we feel are the best crosses and plant only those.

Nice pattern on Geometric Wizard. Another good selection of seedlings. The cross of Daddy's Heart with I Don't Kid has an intersting eye pattern on it.

Stella's Ruffled Fingers may not bloom as much as Stella de Oro (I don't of any that do), but for us last season, it bloomed in three waves, one of which was at the very end of the season.
