White oak wood floor

Ive been presented with a hitch in my plan of site finished white oak wood floors. I wanted bona nordic seal, with traffic HD. My installer uses Bona exclusively. However, he is refusing to do nordic seal and will only do the next color up- natural. I asked if he will do Loba 2K invisible protect , which he said he will but has never used Loba before. I live in a pretty small town, he’s the best we have. He has 30 years experience doing this. But wont do samples. I want a really white / grey /raw color. I LOVE how it looks right now being raw. Please give me all the advice on how to proceed!

Use Naturalseal as suggested by your installer. Nordicseal will be too white for what you are trying to achieve.

Loba Invisible has issues with hazing and with 'foot prints' showing. It is enough to drive homeowners to drink! Nope. Not kidding.

I love Loba products but the Invisible Protect AT is WAY too matte and it is TOO hard to live with. Stick with your refinishers preference. If s/he is suggesting NaturalSeal then that's what you will want to do. If s/he won't do samples then OFFER TO PAY for samples. Like $100 to put down a sample of NordicSeal 2 coats, NordicSeal 1 coat and then NaturalSeal 1 coat. And then a coat of HD over top...

By offering to pay for the samples (this shouldn't be that way...but some guys just do NOT like opening product before it is time) you show you are willing to work with the hassle he has to go through. It also shows him/her that YOU are SOOOOOOOO nervous that you do NOT want to make a mistake.

If he STILL won't do the samples, then respectfully ask to alter the contract. That S/HE will GUARANTEE the homeowner will be 100% satisfied by his/her colour suggestion. If the homeowner is not 100% satisfied with the blind choice they were given, then it is up to the professional to correct the colour (full sand to raw wood and start over) at the pro's expense.

By asking for a contract caveat, you will show the pro you are SUPER nervous about picking a floor colour site-unseen. Which in the design industry is a 'no-no'. And s/he knows it.

Here is our white oak floor with a medium brown stain. I wanted a richer brown and even did my own stained samples to show the flooring people. The flooring people only left the stain on about 20 seconds before wiping and it is lighter than I wanted. The stain did not have very long to soak into the wood. The stain color is Minwax Red Oak.

Hi capegirl-- In our last house, we received no instruction on caring for the hardwoods (red oak stained a medium color with satin finish) and I used Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the floors once a month or so. Otherwise, it was just a vacuuming & a damp mop with plain water. In the new house, we were told to use a damp mop with plain water to clean our floors for the 1st year and to make sure no water was left behind. We use a Swiffer SweeperVac almost daily for routine cleaning--it vacuums and dustmops all at the same time! Seems to be working so far. Hope this helps!

Mixed woods are also the rule here in the Tennessee bluegrass region. The "fancy floor" tends to be blue poplar , which is yellow poplar from old trees where the heartwood turned blue with great age. ("Yellow poplar" is the lumber from the Tulip Poplar, which is no longer classified as a poplar at all, but the "Tuliptree"). Upstairs, one generally sees ash floors. Oak floors were disdained for their appearance, and one never sees pine floors until much later. It's sometimes called "railway pine" as pine lumber came into vogue only when railways were around to ship it into the region; pine trees don't thrive in this soil. I am guessing the red oak may well be original to your home as well. 2" boards were common by 1893.

Hi, You'd need to find a shop that produces hardwood millwork. They will be able to run what you want in room-size lengths. It will not be as inexpensive as oak strip flooring, and there is an added premium for "all one length". Unless they have a substantial yard, some shops may not be able to produce more than one room's worth at a time, as they may not be able to get the lengths you need. Since the flooring is not coming from a flooring mill, you would be well advised to acclimatize it in the room for a month, so it won't shrink or swell too much.
