I'm not seeing that TAJ work at all with your floor. Are those tiles you are also using?

The herringbone was used in my shampoo box the other one is a tile I like but may not go with either taj mahal or Laza.

Probably not. But I'd go look at the slabs available with your door and floor samples.

Your floor has a lot of movement and color variation so I think the simpler everything else is the better off you'll be. I'd stay away from the Taj and that other tile, too. Bring in other interest with your accessories and I know you'll be happier with it in the long run.

Thank you! Do you think the laza is a good choice put in kitchen? Our island will be made of maple with a natural/light stain. Also thinking anout using it as BS on sink wall but not range wall would that look odd with 2 diff BS Heres my kitchen as it is now We are thinking about a banquet at the end of the sink wall under the big window its 72” long. We’er on an acrea with lots of trees to look at! The islans has not been built yet its 66” x 48”.

What is your kitchen flooring? Is that the stain on the cabinets?

My own experience with a banquet is that they are hard to get in and out of and if you have multiple people sitting on the window side, if the one in the middle has to get out then so does other people to let them out. Also, people sit at a table differently and like to be able to skootch up or sit further away and with a banquet you don't have that option. Just some thing to think about as you explore this option.

My flooring will be the wood look tile its going in the whole house. We’ve taken up most of old floor for the new kitchen floor plan. The old kitchen was U shaped. This is a 1960 ranch style house that had original everything. The perimeter cabinets will be painted pure white only the island will be stained. The banquet is mostly for my husband to sit n drink his coffee n look out of the window. We are empty nesters.

Do you have the island stain picked out?

Does the white in the quartz compliment the white paint you have chosen?

Yes the quartz looks good with the pure white. We have not choosen the stain color need to talk with the painter for his recommendation. Im hoping theres one that will leave a natural look. Thank you for your help!

Did you take some of your flooring and put it up next to the cabinets to see how the flooring would go with the natural stain look?

Thinking about your BS behind the range. So quartz is a funny thing behind a range as it has properties that can discolor from the heat or even melt depending on the range. Also, in some areas it won't meet code. I think if it was me, I wouldn't do a quartz backsplash anywhere and would do tile every where. I think with white counters, white cabinets that it will give you some interest and texture. And some reflection. I wouldn't even decide whether it is a white or color tile until everything is in place and you can actually put samples up. So often on Houzz we see people select the tile ahead of time and often it ends up not being the best decision. Wait if you can.

I did get a sample book of stains to try with my floor cant really tell with just that. They are installing the island now im going to see how it looks. I’ll see if they have scrap pieces to use some stains on. My husband says the same thing about too much white he wants a BS to beak it up. We’ll have 1/2 slab left was trying to use it up or they get to keep it for a remnant. I do have a counter in the laundry room and a small vanity I can use it on.

You for sure don't want to pick a stain from a book plus each type of wood can take the stain differently so you are right to get some scrap pieces to try out. Plus, you want to be able to see the stain in different light.

I did a quick look to see if I could find a kitchen similar to what you are wanting to achieve. I'm not having much luck with a stain island with your flooring. Which I think looks like the photo below? But I did come across this one with a painted island and a gray ( I think) BS for whatever it's worth.

Becky- take a look at this thread as Beth has posted some backsplashes that might be a consideration. Even though the OP has gray cabinets I think these could easily translate over to your white cabinets if you want to do something a bit more interesting and marry your flooring with something in the kitchen. If you happen to like this direction, then keep it in mind as you pick out your island stain.

It sounds as though your plan was to use white cabinets with the laza countertop with a stained island but maybe a light grey paint with the same countertop would tie in better with your flooring or perhaps a walnut countertop if there are brown tones in the floors? This chevron or herringbone pattern is a fun way to vary the floor material. A possible backsplash idea (bottom pic) although a simple white tile in a fun shape or elongated subway. If you do the grey island a light grey backsplash would work as well. The banquette is a good option for that small dining space. I also think it looks as though this kitchen is separate from your other spaces and you could use a lighter flooring as the grey is just so dark, heavy and masculine-if you had vaulted ceilings and a much larger kitchen it would work better in that type of setting. If you have the flooring available set out a large sample to view in your kitchen and see how it feels to you.

I love herringbone floors! I’ll have to ask the tile installer if its something that can be done. we alresdy bought all the flooring for the house bought it last summer. Our island just got built yesterday we paid extra for the maple wood so we could stain it. We’re making this an open concept house. The flooring has a varity of color its a little busy. It has brown, tanish, cream and gray in it.

Heres a close up of the floor and a pic from my entryway. Please excuse the total mess we’ve been renovating the kitchen since end of April! And living on concrete floors for a year! It was a sunken LV we had concrete poured to raise the floor. The back wall where the large window and back door is will be a 12’ double sliding door. We have no idea yet on furniture placement or which area to make the DR!

Don't do a herringbone. With the open concept you don't want to break that flooring up by going with another pattern. Keep it consistent. The backsplash would serve better for a pattern. Is that white tile staying?

The white tile will be replaced when the kitchen, bkf area, laundry/utility and a half bath are finished then we’ll have our tile guy come and replace this half of the house.

Looking good! What do you mean "top molding?" The crown at the top of the upper cabinets where they meet the ceiling?

One thing I noticed which may not be a big deal to you but since you are looking to go with light stain on the island I'll mention it. On the front right "leg" there are those 2 long dark streaks of grain in the wood. From what I can see of the rest of the island, it looks pretty dark streak free. Those will only be more emphasized with a light stain so just making sure you are ok with that.

Don’t mix white-white and creamy white. I don’t think creamy white works with the flooring on my monitor.

Keep your remnants for the laundry room - don’t use it in the kitchen as the backsplash . I agree with your husband that the backsplash can add a dramatic feature to this very quiet color scheme. I like what you’ve chosen so far but hold off on that decision until the whole room is done. As @tedbixby has said, we have tons of dilemmas with unfortunate, early backsplash choices.
Not that you asked, but I agree with @tedbixby about banquettes.
I appreciate living in a construction mess for months. Although it’s not fun you are doing a lot of good renovation to this house. Raising the living room floor is huge, but will make your life safer and the adjacent rooms flow better.

I noticed those streaks too! At first i thought they were made from the saw(my husband said some streaks like that on the cut edges were saw marks) but looking at it I think its the grain in the wood. Im not sure yet if itll bother me or just think its wood and gives it character.

I think they give the legs character.

Yes i was talking about the crown molding. this is the molding/trim above our doors. My husband thought it would look more like this but we both think whats there is more decorative but complements the door trim.

I like the crown at the top of the cabinets. It goes well with the style of the cabinets.

Thank you all for the comments! I agree that a banquet isnt good seating for multiple ppl I have a nice buffet table that fits perfectly under that window BUT my husband will retire in a couple of years and he thinks he’ll sit there and look out the window while he drinks his coffee.

Need opinions on a hidden pantry door. we have an 8’ x 4’ walk in pantry behind the range wall. We already put a wall pantry on the back wall the cabinet maker made it a couple months ago so we could put our stuff somewhere. We took the doors off and moved it. We want him to make pantry doors leading into the walk in. Heres the cabinet before and now w/o the doors and we set it in front to give us an idea how it will look. we also plan to have him make a 3rd pantry next to it for broom/mop closet. The blue tape in the 3rd pic is where the broom pantry will be.

Regarding the banquette. Can you post a photo of that area.

I'm sorry if I'm going over and over this but when you talk about putting a banquet in this area above, you are talking a table, too? If so, it just doesn't look like there is enough space for it and it would go well into your walkway. If it is going to be a place for him to drink coffee and look outside, why not put a bar height table up against the window with 2 chairs facing out towards the view?

Still not understanding the hidden pantry door.

I did think about having a countertop mounted under the window with bar stools. Thats a nice table you posted! And i do agree theres not enough room for a table. might be better to buy a bench for under the window or put my buffet table there. Heres a pic of a hidden pantry door.

Didn't you say that you will have remnant from your countertops? If so, is it large enough to do a countertop mounted under the window?

If you can have matching doors to your “hidden” walk in pantry, that would be very cool. It sure beats having to walk around a wall to get to that pantry space.
What is the size of the eating area? A small round table could be adequate for you and your husband to have meals and read the morning paper. The idea of a shelf made of the countertop material doesn’t sound terrific to me. If it extends past the countertop then you can add bar stools but as you get older, those seem less like a good idea. Table height chairs are the best solution.
