Comments (14)Thanks muchly for all your advice! I think Ill try to find those books in the store before buying them Toni, thanks! Ive read most of the fact sheets from Coop Extensions I can find online. Im mostly wondering what types of things are too frustrating from seed, I understand Key Lime are a great choice, short juvenility. Mandarin, bad choice. Which of the stranger citrus are nucellar/true? (Im looking for Kaffir fruit this season for another seedling!) Also, if Key Lime is marginal in cooler summer locations, will they produce OK in Nashville (90+ most of the summer, but now its pretty cool/dry, indoors)? I understand the concept of chilling hours, but is there an analagous warming hours for picky citrus? Take Care, happy citrusing everyone! I took Latin in high school. I think I can still read it, but botanical names are a bit far for me! Especially citrus, but I have printed out a few things about sweet/ trifolate/ fortunella and am wrapping my brain around some distinctions....See MoreWhat do you do when you pay a lot of money?
Comments (6)I grow Galaxy, no problems at all with it, in fact it's one of my better growing streakers, has kept the streaking beautifully. You do have to keep an eye on all the streaked ones though just in case they start to revert to something unstreaked in which case you remove that part of the hosta. I don't do anything special with the more pricey ones, they all go into the ground, don't really have a vole problem though. I do know of a couple of places where Galaxy is cheaper than that. Comments (21)Yeah, not really my idea of 'living' either, dlm. I can't imagine spending all those hundreds of dollars a month for all this stuff. I used to pay $155 for internet/VOIP/cable tv. I thought that was an outrageous amount to spend on these things! I also have a cell phone strictly for emergencies that costs $25/mo. I've since switched to a landline $17/mo (only $8 for the landline but another $8+ surcharges). I need this for security system/fire, incoming calls, and power outages. I use Google Voice (free) for all outbound calls (usually works just fine though certainly not as convenient as just picking up a handset). Switched from broadband to DSL which is half the cost at $30/mo. It usually seems to be faster! As for the tv, it's not something I really enjoy or want to spend my time on. I will use the DVD player when I want to spend my time watching something really good (once I get it set up). Or read, play music or even watch select shows that are available on the net. I am however paying $22/mo for the antenna service at this point (the digital box and indoor antennas I tried aren't working very well). I think I'll be getting a roof antenna installed to rid the monthly fee for that expensive service. I am also changing over to a $100/yr prepaid phone card for the emergency cell (has a $1 daily access fee when the phone is used). So, $8-$10/mo for that instead of $25, reduced by $200/yr. So, down from approximately $180/mo (ridiculous) to $78. Hopefully $56/mo in the near future when I've got an outdoor antenna installed. Boy that sounds good. More like the old days!...See MoreElectric Bill, What do you pay each month?
Comments (41)During the summer months, my electrci bill runs between $50 to $90 per month. Its about $30 more when the air conditioner runs (whole house A/C). Before I got A/C, I ran a dehumidifier in the basement. It had a problem of freezing up. I found that was due to too much humidity coupled with the cooler basement air. The solution was to raise is a couple of feet off the floor. Since the basement can not be tightly sealed away from the rest of the house, it gets to be a loosing proposition because the humidity continues to be replenished from upstairs. Whole house A/C was the answer. It reduces the temperature difference between the basement and upper floor and effectively dries the air. Whats more, the A/C does not use much more electricity than a humidifier and fans in the upper floor. To a small degree, it reduces the load of the refrigerator and freezer since their ambient air temp is lowered. I've been lucky this summer. I used the A/C for two weeks in June and none since. However, August is coming and I can expect to start it again. Around here, the first 3 weeks of August can be like July....See MoreZalco/bring back Sophie!
