Have I done right?

I have 8 phalynopsis and 1 zygo, they are about 5-8 years old and were climbing out of their pots. about 2-3 months ago they all spiked at the same time (I am elated). some have gone by now and 4 are still blossoming. Today I repotted all of them. i went to pots that were 1-2 inches bigger. I sterilized the orchid mix and drained. I sterilized the pots too. i clipped all dead and dying roots and removed the old used up balls of medium, there was not much in any of them. i sprayed the leaves of all of them with Orchid Mist. I noticed a couple have new spikes started too. Have I missed anything, please. I love my babies and did not want to hurt them. I feel proud that I have been able to keep them alive and happy. I have never had much luck with flowering plants, so feel extra proud about my Orchids.

Sounds like you covered everything. Nice to have everything bloom at the same time, it must have been quite a display. You should share some photos.

One thing I would add is that sometimes after a repot or after blooming you might notice the plant will stop growing for a few weeks. Not a big deal, but sometimes people start messing with them which only makes things worse.

Thank you for your response, I feel better already. I will not touch them again until they climb out of their pots again. i hope the new spikes produce, and I will be sure to write again and let you know. It seems funny that the ones that get more than one spike are usually the minis, but this time it is my big white/cream colored one. the original spike has only one flower left, but a new spike just starting. The Zygo always gets more than one though.

Hi, what would be best is to get them all back in the ground yesterday :-). It's not the time to be digging, pinching tops or cutting taps, and peat and sand are not the way to go. In any case, they won't live as they are, and won't grow even if they make it a short time (though of course not indoors). Their only chance of survival and speed of growth you'd want to fatten the trunks and grow lots of branches for styling options is in the ground - for 3 yrs bare min., 5 is better. Plus digging even at the right time and size is not for beginners. Bonsai are not grown 'up', but cut down, and sycamores don't make great ones anyhow as reducing leaf size will be a problem. It really, really is best to at least learn some basics before you either dig any more or spend at all. Go to bonsai4.me.com for those, and look for local clubs to join - they're the best way to learn while seeing what to do and being able to ask questions. Good luck and have fun.

I assumed it was normal to return home with many, many flats regardless of how much you start on your own! The flats at the nursery usually are so pretty how can one say no?? Currently, I have at least 10 flats, 6 six packs each in my garage. Then we must discuss the 20 1/2 perennials in the garage and 15 of so sitting in the yard waiting to be planted. I thought growning on my own would decrease my spending but... nope... not happining!!!!! Christy

Help with Early Blight

I have the ortho fugicide with Daconil, I belive you can apply as needed. I used to have a problem with early blight, now I just mulch around the plants and I spray the plants after every rain, making sure to get the undersides of the leaves. Knock on wood, have not lost a plant to early blight in a few years. I would not increase the strength of the fungicide, it might do more harm than good, I would try more applications first. Don't forget, waffles aren't just for breakfast! Like crepes, waffles are an excellent vehicle for savory meal concoctions. Anything you could stuff inside a vol-au-vent shell, pour over rice, potatoes or pasta or serve on toast (yeah, I grew up eating creamed-whatever on toast!) can be stuffed, poured, or served on a waffle. Waffles actually make a pretty tasty faux Yorkshire pudding with roast beef (all those little squares, just waiting to be filled with gravy) and if you are a fan of crab or tuna melt sandwiches, think about using a waffle! A personal favorite is a warm waffle PB&J. :D
