I went to my favorite nursery today.I said I wasn't but I did.And just like someone else said earlier I just had to buy something.They had lupines, my gotta have this year.And they were get this, over on the "over planted table"!! That means each tall,healthy plant was $1.00. Well I told myself that even though I have a full flat with only 2 sprouts I had some and could wait....wrong.I bought 5.And the veggies and herbs on this table were 4 for $1.00.I bought 8 veggie plants.Thier tomatoes were so strong looking and full, mine are little sprouts. Then there was the lettuce bowl delema.Last year I did a medium size lettuce bowl, never really ate any, there was never enought to make a salad. Well my "friend" at the register said make the bowl bigger, more plants more lettuce...so I did.I bought a full flat of lettuce bowl mix.I did get 12 herb plants, I don't grow them well I figured at this price, I would try again.

Maybe next year I will be able to wait but this being my first year ws everything looks so little.I have tons of containers, not doing anything.I know most will soon, but I needed a fix today.Not only did I buy, when I promise myself not to, I ate a hole king size butterfinger on the way home, to console my plant weakness and guilt.Thanks for listening, I am off now (for you catholics out there)to say 5 Hail Mary's,3 Our Fathers and The Act of Contrition.

I assumed it was normal to return home with many, many flats regardless of how much you start on your own! The flats at the nursery usually are so pretty how can one say no??

Currently, I have at least 10 flats, 6 six packs each in my garage. Then we must discuss the 20 1/2 perennials in the garage and 15 of so sitting in the yard waiting to be planted.

I thought growning on my own would decrease my spending but... nope... not happining!!!!!

I still buy, it just makes me more picky :)
My DH asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day... I said "Plants"..... soooo I've got a $100 bill to go spend on pretty things tomorrow while everything is on sale and before they get so picked over.

I agree that even if only one young person--or anyone, for that matter--is deterred or stops smoking b/c of those ads, it will be worthwhile. However, I also agree that most teens don't think they will ever get old, or that anything like that could/would happen to them. Even young adults--who began smoking as teens, I guess--seem to forget/bypass/overlook the possible future horrors of smoking. I particularly have in mind a 23 year old who didn't stop smoking all thru her pregnancy, even tho she knew the possible harm it could do to her unborn child. To me, that's almost "child neglect". As a young child, I couldn't wait till I got old enough to smoke--I had an aunt who seemed very glamorous with a cocktail in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Fortunately, the first time I tried it, I choked and that was enough for me. Knowing how hard it is for me to stay away from chocolate chip cookies, I'd have a harder time stopping smoking!

There were only a few things I'd change in our new house. 1) I wanted but still didn't get enough outlets underneath the TV sets in the house and we still need power strips. 2) Our master bath vanity is too high. I wanted it lower, but somehow, it didn't happen...dropped the ball somewhere along the line. 3) We told the security guy that our walls were being spray foamed, but he didn't pull the wires out far enough and they got foamed into the walls, so now we have battery sensors that need replacing every so often... a PITA 4) I had the house audio use 2 zone and should've added a 3rd for the bedroom area as I like to listen to the same music all over the house when I'm cleaning. 5) The electrician screwed up the gas fireplace. I wanted it hard wired, not remote, but he hooked up the switch to the blower, not the on/off. By the time we found out, it was embedded in all the woodwork on the FP surround and couldn't be altered. 6) I would've put in more expensive windows than we did.

Sorry you are having such a ruff time:( I always thought the "You knew what you were getting into" statement was an unfair one since you never really know what you are getting into untill you have lived in it for awhile. I never imagined we would wind up with the twins. I didn't imagine we would have a baby either since I had been told I had a really slim chance of getting pregnant. We went from thinking it would be just us to having three children living with us! HAHAHAHA. WA-POW! Everything changed with one phone call from the unstable Ex wife and one positive test strip. I knew he had a nutty Ex. It become apparent pretty quickly when we started dating seriously. Being the great guy he is he had also warned me up front. Not just about the ex but about his rather ruff past as well. I still decided he was worth it. Three years later I am still glad we got hitched. We have all adjusted and are doing good. We have up's and down's whenever BM is in and out but we (J the kids and I) are all doing fantastic together. We have squabbles and issues arise but we come out of them together. I am lucky the kids have been so loving and excepting. Maybe it's because their mother isn't really in the picture. Maybe it's because they were so young when the divorce and re marriage took place. I'm so lucky to be as close with them as we are. We are like a family. Not a STEP family but a family. BM is the only blip on the radar. I agree with you 100% that you should think long and hard about deciding to engage in a step situation. It can be really hard and thankless for some. There is also always that possibility you'll get that life altering call from BM saying she's dropping off the kids. It all has to be considered. Theres still really no way of knowing untill you get there though. It's always a bit of a gamble. Best of luck.

Yep, I've done it too. In fact, a few weeks ago I said here that I was only making lists for sowing next year & no buying. That control didn't last very long. Was my birthday 2 weeks ago and I told DH I wanted some roses. Couldn't find the ones I wanted (New Dawn was 1 of them) so he gave me money and I spent 3 hours at the nursery. A few days later I finally found the roses I was looking for on the net and they should be arriving 1 day this week.

Lupine is SO EASY to WS! I've done it three years in a row (because I can't get enough Lupine...too much is enough).

They bloomed the first year, was short, but pretty. Then the second year, I find out it has a scent! A very nice scent!
I WSed more this year (of course).
Collect seeds from the ones you purchased this year and WS them...then you'll have even more :-)

I'm having a bit of trouble with lupines. I've had several seedlings die on me, and the others have been bitten up by some kind of insect. They're still alive so far, so hopefully I'll end up with some nice ones.

I would buy some if they were only a dollar each. It sounds like you got some great bargains. I wouldn't feel guilty about that. If the plants were really expensive, I would, but sounds like you got some great deals. You should be proud :)

Awww, Linda. Don't burst my balloon, please (LOL). I was sooo proud of the Lupines I've grown this year - from seed I collected on vacation in Maine in 2001!!! They are doing great and I look forward to seeing their blooms maybe this summer. If not, I just love the foliage, too.

Shrubs are my weakness (well, one of my weaknesses). I've got a few on my wishlist at Bluestones - haven't bought any yet. But I'm sure I will.

I WSed a bunch of lupines two years ago - gave most of the seedlings away and kept two for myself. The ones I gave away grew wonderfully for their new owners, mine bit the dust. I'll try them again - love the foliage too.

I've got no room to talk - I've been doing the same thing. I console myself, however, w/ the fact that I'm buying from local growers (at the weekly Farmers Market), and I'm only spending $1.00 per plant. Don't ask me to count up all of the $1.00 plants, tho - I just like to remember that they're cheap, not how much I've spent overall! :D

I'm going to my favorite nursery "just to look" on Wednesday. It's a mom & pop business that's grown to 7 or 8 huge greenhouses over the years. They love their plants and it shows, and they grow everything. I love walking through and just breathing it in. Of course, it'd be rude not to buy anything, right?

I ordered shrubs/ conifers this year. Also waiting for mail order of rare native plants all of 6 of them. Am not even trying to go to nurseries- can't buy anything- have at home 50 trays waiting to be planted...

I know you would have done the same..right?
