Kitchen Remodel
I just moved into a new home and am starting a much needed remodel on this kitchen. I am leaning towards staining the cabinets, but am worried about amateur imperfections. Mostly tacky surfaces. Is there any way to make this look like a classy farmhouse kitchen without painting or staining them?

Comments (18)This is a story of what you should NOT do with your house. Bought a tiny 2 bedroom 1950s ranch in 1989. Added a floor and put the living, dining and kitchen on the top floor. It gave us a view of the mountains and the lake. Garage in the basement was incorporated into the basement floor space. Built a detached garage in 1997 to augment the garage that was lacking. Tried to see if we can move up in the neighborhood. Could not afford the comparable view and did not want to give it up. So we brought the middle floor to the stud and reconfigured it for 3 bedroom and 2 bath in 2002. (previously only 1 bath and very knarly floor plan which was inherited from the original house.) Finished the basement with a media room, infloor heating, trim to match the rest of the house etc. Fast forward another few years... We still cannot afford the view in the slightly better neighborhood any other way. (The upcharge is about 1/2 to 1 mil.) We looked at many houses recently! I recently saw a beautiful house that was done very well. But there was no view from the kitchen or the dining room. Saw another house that had a view from the living room only. We are not in the living room until it is dark outside! We would lose our breakfast with sunrise over the mountains. This was the usual story of all the houses that we looked at. At the comparable price point, the houses have the view from the bedroom, not from the kitchen or the living space. Because we have the ususual space arrangement of living/kitchen/dining floor at the top, we have the view from the rooms we use everyday as a family. This is unusual but gives us a very open space with 180 degree view. We are now embarking on a kitchen remodel of the kitchen that was put in 1989/1990. The kitchen was done on a budget and is not at the level of the quality that we have updated the rest of the house. So we are actually the other way around. Whole house remodel first and back to the kitchen which is 20 years old. In the end, we have the house that we want to live in. Had we not done this and lived with what is there or moved to another house and given up a few things, ie view, open living configuration, natural light etc, we would be way ahead in the money! Comments (31)Elizabeth, the floors have to go as they look better in photos. In person they scream cheap. It is cheap laminate. I will also have bare spots where the wall will be removed that I have to fix up. I was planning on putting some tile in the kitchen area but may just do hardwood throughout the whole house. I have also heard that the ikea cabinets hold up rather well but it seems that they use quite a bit of MDF with a foil over it. I personally would prefer a wood face as that sees quite a bit of abuse and potential liquid spills (I am just at the beginning with a 3 year old and 1.5 year old)....See MoreHelp with kitchen complete kitchen remodel plan
Comments (8)Thanks. We do spend a lot of time in the family room. That was my first thought actually of opening that wall. The initial problem with that wall between the family room and the kitchen is that it is a load bearing wall. The living room we use as more of a formal sitting room if we have friends over. My wife also has her desk there. My wife has also thought about making the living room the dining room. Personally I think that is a waste of space but am open to being convinced otherwise. My wife and I would like to have more of an open floor plan. Thus thinking of combining the kitchen and dining room into one room. We eat 99% of our meals at the dining room table, so the table would have to fit into the larger kitchen design concept. I would like to incorporate kitchen and eating together. To me the difficult part is all the doors in the kitchen... the sliding doors to outside, the family room door, hall door and basement door....See More

2 years agoYour kitchen cabinets are just like mine oak. I do have granite countertop with the house, and couldn't stand the orange color walls in the kitchen and plain white tile backslash. I painted my kitchen a light cream color and bought peel and stick wall paper for now that I put over the tile then added to the soffit. $120 and kitchen looks different. If you afford new countertop, look into it. I have to restain my cabinets too, but not now. The wall paper added texture to the kitchen, maybe not the best look, but it doesn't look so drab and dull anymore. Like you, I will have to restain and doing this myself as I have way to many other costly expenses. I cant even change the hardware as the cabinets at one point were stained around the hardware. I found on pintrest people sanding down oak cabinets and just adding a clear varnish that will not yellow and it looks sooooo good! I added a photo of my kitchen with the peel and stick wallpaper I used, it is waterproof. I also added a picture from pintrest on a bathroom cabinet that was sanded down and she used a matte varnish to keep the natural wood look.

2 years agoThis looks so similiar to our kitchen layout! There is a product at local home improvement stores that you paint onto the cabinets and it allows the cupboard to have a new paintable surface. The product smells awful (strong) and i recommend painting all your cupboards with this product outside if possible but its so worth it if you want a new look without spenfding alot of money! I would definitely move the vent in the floor or pay to have it relocated if possible, that will make a huge difference and just purchase matching appliances when you can afford it! Good Luck!!

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoWe have oak cabinets that were exactly like yours. I opted to paint the cabinets. But I also filled the grain before painting. Many, many months of work- started in Oct. 2020 and finished April 2021. I used Aquacoat filler, BIN primer and Benjamin Moore Advance in Chantilly Lace. Still have the island to do- adding trim and baseboard then painting in BM Hale Navy. Also updating wall plates to satin nickel finish.
