My almond tree leaves suddenly turned brown.

This is an approx. 1 year old almond that I bought from the nursery a few weeks ago.

When I bough it, the leaves were strong and green and looked just fine. Now they're all wilting and starting to turn brown.

I'm in northern Tunisia with typical Mediterranean weather. I've kept it in a place in my patio where it receives about 5 hours of direct sunlight a day. The weather hasn't been very hot, maybe around 25 C. However, there have been some days with rather strong winds.

Any ideas what could have been causing this?

Was it under shade at the nursery? Have you been watering it thoroughly? Has it always been against the wall?

At the nursery it was in the middle of a field among other plants under the sun. It might have received some shade from neighboring plants but it wasn't kept in an intentionally shaded spot.

I have always kept the soil moist since I received it. I have never let it dry out. It's been against the wall since I bought it.

I'd guess looking at your ground alkali/salt soil. Also would be nice to know the drainage rate of the hole you planted into. I would have mixed about 50:50 soil:finished compost to plant the tree. Nice blooms though. Hopefully you dug out any compacted soil to a 4 foot radius and straitened the roots out. Paint exposed trunk and main branches white with 50 to 100% latex--water based. Get rid of that hideous rock mulch around the tree out to 4 feet. Normally I'd say 4" thick of wood chip mulch but in your case, make it finished compost. It can works its way in slowly. This will keep roots moist, cool and eventually fertilized. Should reduce the heat reflected off the ground considerably too. Get a watering well out to at least the canopy line and heavy water infrequently. It is possible it reflects a copper deficiency but I doubt it. Good morning, Missmary. New growth can be affected by a frost so it is possibe that a frost caused the leaves to turn blackish. This warm winter has affected hydrangeas in many places similarly, by making them leaf out too early and then surprise them with freezing temperatures. The frost should not hurt the roots so the plant is in no danger. Keep the shrub well mulched (3-4 inches), the soil evenly most and, if you use winter protection, remove it 1-2 weeks after your average date of late frost in Spring (local nurseries can tell you this date if you do not know). Do not fertilize stressed out plants now; maybe in early June.

The color also looks too yellow to be right. From the photo, it looks like it may have been planted too deep since I cannot see the root flare, the part of the trunk where the base of a tree broadens slightly, though it might be just hidden by mulch. Or it may have come from the supplier planted too deep. IME pin oaks are reasonably happy with OH soil. Mulch shouldn’t be against the trunk, so pull that back. Ideally mulch will start a few inches from the trunk and go out to the drip line of the tree on a small tree such as this to reduce competition from grass. I would pull aside the mulch and soil until you find the root flare to see how deeply it is planted compared to the flare. Have you done a pH test? What has the weather, particularly rain, been like this year compared to usual?

i suspect the wall is baking it .. retaining heat long into the night and therefore no .. or a reduced ... night time recovery period ...

move it away from the wall .. and maybe even into shade for a week or two.. so the roots can restore some vigor to the plant ...

i would also protect the pot from direct sun ... when it was grouped with its brothers at the nursery... the pots were probably together.. so only edge pots actually got direct sun on the pot ... or im wrong ...

I have checked the wall at sundown and it was rather cold, so I don't think it's caused by the temperature of the wall. Maybe it just needs a more shaded spot as you mentioned.
