Help identifying this weed.

Hello,

I've been battling weeds since the house beside me was bought but the owners dont live there and let it go.

I recently decided to go all out and fix this once and for all, bought a tiller, bought new soil, new grass seed. Went the whole nine yards.

Most of the weeds came back.

I then decided to go nuclear on the weeds with chemicals, bought crab grass killer, broad leaf killer, and they seem to be working, BUT what ever this is in the above pictures wont go away. What the heck is it? I was thinking that actually might be grass seeding?? Or is it a weed? I've looked on-line and i see no weed that looks like this except MAYBE the nutsedge weed but i dont think so.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, its definitely a grass. And no, it’s not nutsedge. Anything you spray to kill it will kill all grasses. Can’t you just pull it out?

Thank you very much, I'll try to pull them out once the crab grass has completely died off (used XLR8 on the crab grass). Hopefully i'll have a clean lawn yet.

Your options in Ontario are much more limited then many in the United States have since many of the plant poisons readily available here have been banned for homeowner use there. Many of us do not consider any of the clovers to be "weeds" and do nothing to control them since they do help place nutrients in the soil and the flowers help feed the pollinators. The most common plant poison, 2,4, D with Dicanbra, has been banned in Ontario.

Agree about the stiltgrass. Do not let it go to seed. It is VERY INVASIVE and will take over whole forests. Pull it out as you see it. It first came into this country as dry packing material in shipments from Japan and has taken over where it is left to grow. Nothing will grow where it grows once it takes over. Horrible horrible plant. I can only control it on my property. I am powerless over it around my area.

I also think Nicotiana, and that would be more appropriate to what looks to be either a cobbled walk or wall depending on orientation.

Thanks for confirming, @gardengal48 (PNW Z8/9). I sprayed an application of tenacity 3 days ago and chickweed is listed as a targeted pest!
