Water loss in pond - leak or evaporation
Comments (18)Hi we had 2 small pondds in hour garden 'made by last tenent' So we decided to take that out and make a big one 2meters by 1meter, depth half a meter, we have a small water fall and fountain with plants, we put fish in was looking good, Then disaster the wather started to go down so we 'topped it up'' the fish started to die 1 sometimes 2 at a time, water still leaking, By this time most of the fish had gone, so we drained the water 'put remaining fish in a tank' we got another pond liner ;deciding to put the old one on the bottem for extra layer, got new liner in situ, filled with water put in plants left it for a week got the water checked to make sure we could get more fish, so far so good, we were really pleased to beable to then add fish we got 2 to start off see how they went on, Yes they are doing really well so hoped to ge some more in this weekend, BUT alas where is the water going !!!!! you guessed it went out monday morning about 1 inch of water gone, topped it up with rain water out of the Butt fine come Teusday water still gone down *fish still looking ok* Surely we said not another leak... if so this pond could end up becoming a rose garden, MY question is why would i be loosing water yet again other than another leak, Please answer this for me . Comments (7)Hey Mike, I know this can be frustrating when we do everything for the plant and then it's still not enough!!! My plants that I brought inside for the winter were prepared 2-3 weeks in advance of bringing them in for the winter. They were all placed in a room vacated by my son whom is at VT. I cut away all of the leaves and left about a half of an inch of the stem (from the leaf) then about 2 weeks later the rest of that yellow leaf stem just came or popped off with ease. I stopped watering them about the same time that I cut off all of the leaves. I gave them water about once a month ( about a cupful to each plant) The room was kept with the heat off and the door closed. I tried to keep the blinds closed most of the time as well. The room never got cold...but was somewhat heated with the rest of the house being warmed throughout the winter. They all seemed to pull through...but I was worried about putting them out in my temporary greenhouse. They are all doing well outside on my deck. My plants did try and grow some leaves during the winter, but I did cut them back when they did grow a leaf or two. It is so hard to ignore them over the winter...that's why I closed the door. I kept going in and looking at them. Keep at it Mike... they are just trying to adjust from the winter to this crazy spring. How cold are your temps at night? Are your plants still in the greenhouse? Let us know how the rest of your plants are doing!!! Take care everyone!!! Laura in VB...See MoreCharlie's Soap ~ Laundry Booster & Hard Water Treatment
Comments (14)@ Cavimum I always thought 4 grains per gallon was considered relatively soft, but a quick googling says that 4 GPG would be considered moderately hard water, as you said (USGS defines hard water here). CS laundry booster and hard water treatment may help a little, but I wouldn't expect a major change given your hardness values. I have a whole house softener, so my water has 0 hardness. CS still gave me dingy whites and did not clean as well as my other products. It also did not make my clothes feel soft, as others have claimed, despite repeated washes. I eventually stopped using CS because the results were unsatisfactory. Granted, I'm a picky person. My suggestion would be to buy the CS laundry booster and see how it goes. If you are happy, great. If not, switch to another product and donate your CS detergent stash to a local animal shelter - the puppies will love you forever. Keep the laundry booster to use with any other product you buy down the road. If I were you I would not buy the EcoVantage - there is nothing "eco" about it except the name and it doesn't clean much better than CS. The full ingredients list is not disclosed anywhere, and there are no environmental claims on the label except for the name of the product. I think it's smoke and mirrors. I highly recommend Bi-O-Kleen Premium powder. It's scent-free, environmentally friendly, and most importantly, it cleans well. That's where I would start. You may also like Vaska scent-free. It claims to be as effective as Tide while being natural and using no enzymes. It's herbal-based cleaning at its best, and the lavender scented version is my go-to detergent. It also leaves your clothes much, much softer than any other product (without fabric softener)....See MorePower vent water heater and power loss??
Comments (8)I found out I can get a Generac brand 5000W unit for about 525 (plus tax). Hubby reminded me he would be able to take it tailgating! I found out there are interlock devices where it is wired in to the breaker box but for less money than a separate panel. I have to ask my electrician friend about that. It sounds cool. I think the 5000w would be all I need to be comfortable as I think it can run the furnace as well. We'd just have to be conscious of what we were running at one time and not overload it. Does anybody know if these power vent hwh are usually hard wired to the breakers, or if they plug into an outlet? (which I believe would have to be wired separately.)Since it's a new install I'd think I could go either way if installer was willing. I never considered getting one until people pointed out the power loss issue with the water. That doesn't concern me THAT much, but it did get me thinking......See Moreseedman76
