insulating outside basement walls new construction
Comments (9)you don't need to insulate below the frost level I don't know your Code off-hand. That may be acceptable. But from the view of long-term cost efficiency and comfort, it makes more sense to insulate to the floor. And maybe even under the floor. I'm assuming the basement will be finished. Especially if you're planning to keep the basement above 50ÃÂF. in the winter. Without insulation, you stand a good chance of getting condensation on the concrete from air currents in the finished wall. Overkilling the wall with insulation for the first four feet (R 50+) then forgetting about the bottom two or three feet is rather odd. Insulating only the band, as you suggest, makes no sense and is likely not Code compliant. In any case, using exterior foam presents an insuperable problem on a masonry veneer home. Thermal bridging with masonry veneers negates the benefit of exterior insulation altogether. As well, unless the exterior insulation is meticulously protected before and after construction, it will be degraded. But, fatally to my mind, even if you get exterior insulation to work thermally, you've provided an interstate for termites. And, in Chicago, you've got them. I've been a licenced builder in Toronto for 20 years. After fiddling with different systems, now I insulate the basement on the interior with: 1" XPS followed by fg batts; or with cc spray foam to Code minimum or followed by fg, I have the key joist band area sprayed with cc or oc foam. Other acceptable alternatives include EPS (it has to be much thicker than XPS), isocyanurate boards or fg with Membrain vapour barrier. Comments (2)HI THERE! Not sure about passing code....but I have the same setup (and we live in southern Ontario where we can have some cold spells). The problem is the pipes in the shower do freeze. We had extra insulation put on that wall, but still freezes. Our next project is to relocate the shower. There might be another way around it, but really do give it some thought! Good luck!...See MoreShould we paint the garage door trim to match the siding color?
Comments (0)We recently painted our house, including the siding, all the trim, and the front door. The siding color was previously a light shade of gray, and the front door was black. We were hoping that the new color scheme would cause the garage to recede while also pulling attention to the front door (which is always in the shadows due to the large tree in front, the angle of the house, and the porch roof). We went ahead and painted the garage door trim to match all the other trim. I am sort of feeling that it looks too busy with that garage door trim causing lines to pop out across the front expanse of the garage. Maybe there's just not a good way around it; the original house design, combined with the large tree, really makes the garage prominent. If we painted the garage door trim the same color as the siding, would that look odd? Would it make the garage look too imposing as a wall of nearly solid green? Should we accept the fact the garage is prominent and consider getting nicer doors that we might paint white?...See MoreShould we use Foam Insulation on our Shed a roof Cabin?
Comments (4)You need pictures of what? Ceiling" Building? Roof? The metal roofing is installed yes. I was reading we could add rigid foam board on the outside and although this would require us pulling up the metal roof and putting underneath, it might be a good option. What are your thoughts? We were also looking at putting the foam board under the house but we have alot of mice out here in the country and cant poison them as our animals eat them. Will they eat the foam board?...See MoreDavid Cary
