Although often thought of as a purely utilitarian space, garages are no longer design afterthoughts. Homeowners and design pros have upped the garage ante, as seen in the most popular garages added to Houzz in the past three months. Stylish wooden garage doors, sleek workstations, beautiful driveways and a dartboard are among the features that had people adding these garages to their ideabooks in droves.
1. Rustic Charm
Separate garages offer opportunities to create an attractive outbuilding on a property. They should be well-sited as part of a master plan. With its large gooseneck lights, deep crimson color and detailed garage doors, this garage has barnlike appeal.

2. Attractive Doors
Gone are the days when all garage doors looked the same. While glass doors have topped the most popular list recently, beautifully crafted wooden doors topped the list this quarter.

3. Living Quarters
Living space above a garage gives guests, older children or tenants a private place to stay. This one in Alabama enjoys the same great views of Lake Martin that the house does. In this fairly mild climate, placing the staircase outdoors is a space saver — and you can take in views of the lake on the way up.

This garage outside Jacksonville, Florida, has a studio apartment upstairs that includes a full bathroom, walk-in-closet and morning kitchen. “We call this a ‘carriage suite,’ and we tell our homebuyers it can be whatever they want it to be, whether that’s a guest suite, in-law apartment, a she shed, a man cave, you name it,” says Katrina Watkins of Glenn Layton Homes.

4. Driveway Design
The grid of grass on this Hawaiian driveway is eye-catching and allows rainwater to sink into the ground rather than run off into the drain. And it turns the driveway into a design asset rather than the usual sea of concrete.
This garage door is a good example of how to save money getting a high-end custom look. At first, the budget-friendly raw wood on this door was not the optimum match for the rest of the house. Painter Ty Strong came up with a plan to stain the wood to match the mahogany used elsewhere. “The result was way less expensive than purchasing a higher-end door,” says architect Lisa Kelso.

7. Nods to Commercial Garages
Metal automotive novelty signs adorn this garage, giving it the look of a commercial garage. And like the previous garage, it also has a hangout area. The high-top table is a good spot to relax with a beer or a soda after the automotive or yard work is done.

For car buffs, it may not be enough to admire the cars just while standing in the garage. This garage has two walls of windows and a glass door that provide a view of the garage from inside the house.
