Just to close out this thread for future reference - painted the crown white in all areas where it was not over the cabinets, and it looks a LOT better. Should have been done that way from the start. Left the crown over the cabinets (which is the same design, just different color) as white chocolate, which also looks right. The only tricky part in this was painting the crown where the two colors meet. I did a decent but not perfect job, I will probably go back over it with a fine paintbrush to get a perfect line.

Just closed on this house. We like the brick and the stone. It has tones of brown, cream and grey. the previous owners painted the trim a dark green. We are not in love with the green trim and would like to paint it a grey color and we are thinking the garage door can be a cream. Do you think trim and garage door need to match? I just think there is way too much brown and would really like to lighten it up a bit. Any suggestions?

If you want everything to blend do the same color, if you want the trim to stand out, use a diffrent color. 90% of homes trim stands out. Good luck

Thanks--just gave the painters the colors and we ultimately decided to stick with white, but made an eleventh hour switch from White Dove to Swiss Coffee, which should hopefully read a tiny bit more muted. BTW, this is the look if we'd used the house color--too much gold for me since I'm still very nervous that the color is going to be overwhelming! (We debated going a shade lighter on the gold, but the sample looked like it had the potential to go beige, so fingers crossed on this stronger gold that it will land squarely in the gold/ochre zone once it's on the entire house and not look like a giant blob of macaroni and cheese!) Walked the neighborhood and there is literally no pattern at all to how people do their garage doors--saw at least 15 different approaches, so at least it seems there's no "wrong" way relative to the surrounding homes. If we ever have to replace it, we will go with a natural wood door to match the house entry doors. I still like the Sage Mountain on it, but that color is already a compromise for the window sashes (DH wanted a truer gray) so decided white was a better balance.
