Any help is appreciated for my dilemma!
My home is a craftsman mountain home. I want to put window coverings on top windows to ensure that my husband and I can have a dark room at night. Currently the window coverings for seven windows are draperies but the three upper windows have nothing and the moonlight shines in brightly often. I’m considering plantation shutters and/or roller Shades.
Questions/issues:

Would it be appropriate if I had shutters on the lower windows but motorized roller shades on the top three windows? The sales person from budget blinds said that the shades would have to be outside mounted as they could not go in the inside of these windows because the windows are too small.
If I should be consistent with choosing to go with either all shutters or all roller shades, which would you go with in this style of home and what color?
If shutters, what size, and faux or wooden? I have heard that wooden shutters need more maintenance and can bow over time.

What a beautiful room! Definitely inside mount stained wood shutters to match the trim on the set of three upper windows. Then, if your current drapes are wide enough to meet (and slightly overlap in the middle) when drawn closed, have a seamstress add black-out material to them.

Hey There: I don't know how dark you guys need your bedroom to be to sleep, but shutters do not give you a black out in your bedrooms. We have installed a lot of honeycomb black out shades between the window and the shutters to achieve this.

Roller shades have a similar problem. The fabric is recess about 1/2 to 3/4 inch on each side to make sure the fabric can travel on the roller but this also allows for a lot of light coming in.

Please keep this in mind when you make your decision.

I used a board-mounted box pleated valance on the box bay in my dining room. I screwed the board right into the soffit above the window. The way mine was framed, there wasn't enough room to hang a rod high enough to cover the top of the window trim. I made long panels of the same fabric for my living room windows. I used honeycomb shades on all the windows (not room darkening, but I did consider them). Most of the time I leave them up, but we don't have a guest room and the sleep sofa is in the living room, so privacy is an issue when we have overnight guests. Totally Confused

You have a lovely view, but I'm betting that (depending on your zone, of course) there will be times when it is either too hot or too cold outside, and you will want more protection from the elements than your glass doors provide. I have sliding glass doors at both ends of my sun porch, and have countless times thanked myself for installing thermal drapes over them. The drapes easily slide aside when the weather is good and then just soften the edges a bit, but are there to provide protection, additional warmth or coolness, and privacy when desired. Although even sheers will provide some warmth, they will not keep out the heat of the sun or the chill of a cold wind nearly as well, not will they afford full privacy when that is desired. pottery barn sells silk dupioni drapes with black out liner option. or they used to. i've had mine for 7 years now and look great. i'd do 4 panels, on rings, and buy a curtain tender. i think a wall of silver, floor to ceiling, at night would look just fine. better than 3 rectangles in a row.
