Design Dilemma Storage & Closet

Bedroom Closet Depth / Design - New build

I am looking for input on a regular depth closet ( 24" deep) or a 36" deep closet. It will have bi-fold doors. A friend of mine has a closet that is 100" wide and 40" deep and it feels fairly roomy.

Shown below is my basic plan. Next is a pic of one of the side walls of my friends closet, but I would put shelves all the way back on the sides and have hanging clothes in the center.

I could give the bathroom another foot, which would make the center space between fixtures 5 1/2' x 6' (currently 4 1/2' x 6') if I made the closet a regular 24" deep.

What do you guys think? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I don't think some of those shelves will be very accessible with the clothes hanging in the middle. What do you plan to put on the shelves? Best for off season items you don't need to access daily.

I see no good reason to make the closets more than 24" deep. Your aren't gaining much storage space as it would only be 12" on either side where the shelves are. I have had shelves on the side like that and used them for shoes.

You will probably have to use primer to cover the marker (I think I see "moo" there too?? Is this a dorm room or your own apartment or house? I think a nice pale grey would look great with your furniture and flooring. Maybe check out Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. For the curtains, it looks like you need privacy - maybe wood horizontal blinds? Ikea has some great options for blinds and curtains. Grommet top curtains are nice (clink here) I like wide slat wood or faux wood blinds for light control and privacy (click here Also, your cat is extremely cute! Carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air, diffuses quickly and evenly throughout a room and is often carried to the ceiling by warm air from the source so a CO detector is usually located on a ceiling unless the detector is far from the source or it needs to be lower to be able to see a digital readout, etc. It is recommended that they not be placed in dead air spaces like on a ceiling near a wall or in a corner. It should be near where you sleep so it will wake you rather than in a kitchen where it is likely to produce false alarms. CO is a product of incomplete combustion so a CO detector will not detect a gas leak.

I think because of the shallowness of the closets, you will need to put the hanging rods across the ends and use the center of the back wall for hooks. Measure the length of your shirts/jackets, put one rod as high as you can, leaving room to manipulate the hangers on and off the rod, then put another rod about 2 inches below where the bottom of your shirts/jackets will reach. I'm guessing that the bottom rod will be about 42" below the top rod. Use one end of the closet for the double rod and one end for a single rod if you have lots of long hanging items like dresses. If you have hanging rods at each end, your garments will take up about 24" on each end, leaving only about 4 inches in the center for hooks. I think the rods will have to hang from the ceiling because they need to be installed 12" from the wall which is into the doorway so you can't put the rod from wall to wall. Those are pretty poorly designed closets, unfortunately.

Hi Mark, in this case I would consider the familiar saying to be hyperbole. Every homeowner has different reasons for buying or building the home that they choose and in my experience the decisions are never black and white, although they are hopefully informed ones. Applying passive house concepts to a new build are hardly black and white either, and I would encourage every home builder or renovator reading this to consider any or all pasive house concepts or sustainability elements that match their values, needs and budget. This could mean a custom designed house that qualifies for PassivHaus, LEED or other certification, or it could mean doing what one can to get a Pretty Good House that reduces heating/cooling bills, promotes good indoor air quality and/or reduces impacts to the environment, etc. In my case I am getting a beautiful architect designed home that I can actually afford, yet will be airtight, well insulated, and have wonderfully low heating bills. What I am giving up by not paying the architect to redesign specific to my lot is maybe not having to add that extra log on the fire or the chance to certify my house. To the original reason for my inquiry in this discussion, the draftsperson at the designing architect firm addressed a modification that I proposed, and I was uncertain of the aesthetics of the result. I greatly appreciated the feedback on the window placement and I would expect the drafter to work within any structural limitations.

As for the closet ... without knowing how many people use this closet /whether they're male or female /what type of clothing they need to store ... here's what I'd do:

Why I like this better:

- It allows for 6' total of hanging space. Depending upon your needs, one side could be full-length /the other side double for shirts and other short hanging items.

- You'd need to make the door smaller /enlarge the 17" sides to 26" or so.

- The difficult-to-access by-the-back-wall space here is more accessible than were the shelf corners in your original image.

- You have almost 6' of shelves front-and-center, making them easy to access. 14" deep is a comfortable depth for folded jeans, sweaters, etc. You could have shoes on the bottom and open shelves at the top.

Let me be clear: you're saying you have 4 1/2' walking space in the bathroom now? Not that the bathroom is only 4 1/2' wide total?

If I understand correctly, and if you're willing to move walls, I say steal some space from the bathroom. 4 1/2' is gracious plenty for walking space. If you were to do this, you could use the same image I just drew ... but make the hanging areas wider.

Yes it is walking space in the bathroom. And I miss typed. It is 4' 1/2" from the front of the vanity to the shower and 6' of space adjacently.

It is going to be a rental, so it could be a couple living there or a single, not sure.

I do like your design, thanks for that and my friend said his shelves are 14" deep and that is ample, just as you wrote.
