Backsplash woes - update
Comments (8)I am not sure of the square ft., math never was my strong suit. But the counter is about 15' long, and it's about 18" tall between the counter and the upper cabs. Tile will only go along 14' of the counter though, because we're stopping the backsplash where the cabinets stop and the overhang starts. The height of the backsplash of course, will be reduced where the window is over the sink. That part is around 7.5" tall from counter to underneath the window sill. Then we have a small "cubby" that is about 2' wide and the same 18" between the counter and the upper cabinet. When tile guy spoke to my GC - my GC asked how come he bid so low? His response was that he gave me the price as if he was going to do more work there (he also does tile floors, bathrooms, etc). My interpretation of that was that he is hoping to do more work for my GC - who just so happens to be a Home Depot sub-contractor. Maybe he is hoping to get some work for Home Depot? As far as what exactly it is, it's a 12x12 mosaic sheet with random sized tiles, and the decorative piece is about 10x4" on a mosaic sheet, with random sized rectangular tiles. It's a very simple design and should require minimum cutting (I think!) I should've added that we are paying direct for the tile. He is to supply the grout and sealer and labor. There's a pic of it using the link below - because I *still* can't seem to figure out how to embed pics. LOL I just took 3 pics of the tile and you can see all 3. Bill: Thanks for agreeing with our decision to get rid of tile gal - it means alot coming from you. Makes me feel even more confident that we made the right choice not to use her. ---Boxie Here is a link that might be useful: my backsplash tile...See MoreBudget Woes, Needing Some Advice
Comments (44)This sounds like more of a communications problem than a problem with a builder who is trying to bilk anyone. When we signed our build contract it included mutually-agreed allowances for items like floor coverings, plumbing and lighting fixtures, etc. These dollar figures were needed because there was a construction loan and the bank wanted to know the total price of the finished house. However, there was no doubt that these were not firm figures until we picked out specific products. Our builder also made it clear that from the loan perspective these allowances were "not to exceed" numbers because the loan did not cover anything more. We could choose more costly items and provide a check up front for the difference, or we could make cheaper choices and he would track them as credits. He did not treat these as change orders unless we changed the number or type of items installed. His view was that installing a $100 bathroom fixture was usually the same as installing a $500 bathroom fixture. However, something like switching from tile to hardwood would have been a change order, since the floor prep and installation labor would have been much different. Bruce...See MoreMattress woes....
Comments (38)Maifleur: that is why I bought mine from Costco. If we absolutely hate it, I can just take it back to the store. Dont have to worry about trying to repackage. I was able to sleep on mine last night. No off gassing. I put my mattress cover on it and got it all made up. I think like any new mattress, there is a getting used to period. It wasn't uncomfortable by any means, just a little different. It's not hard, but more of a supported soft. But not like you are sinking in or feel like you need to brace yourself to turn or get up. But it was nice to be able to roll right off the edge of the bed to get out...didnt have to roll UP HILL. I'll give this mattress a try for about a week and then put it in my sons room. I have Macy's or whoever to check the dipping in my mattress...from there, I'll know what I need to do next....See MoreNew mattress update.
Comments (21)Yes, it is foam. (My first go with a foam mattress.) IMO, it sleeps a bit warmer than an inner spring mattress but not what I would call 'hot'. For the first few months, I did have a foam topper on it. Reason for that was because it was a bit more firm than what I was used to and because I already had the topper that I had used on the prior mattresses (actually a 'temporary' air bed until I found a replacement for the inner spring mattress that was awful & got tossed.) Sometime this spring, I removed the topper because with the topper, it did sleep too hot. Much cooler without... Anyway, I do hope this new bed works out for you. As you can tell, I've had my full share of mattress woes, too! Really sucks to wake up feeling worse than what you did when you went to bed the night before. I had been leery of foam mattresses but decided to go with Hot Rod's recommendation of the Wayfair mattress because of his endorsement & it being a cheap gamble....See Morepudgeder
