How do you do a search within just one forum?

I tried to do a search in the Cooking forum today, and Houzz did the search in the entire collection of Houzz forums, and so it was very difficult to narrow the search down.

This definitely needs to get fixed, but it is just one of many thorns lately.

Note: I could not cross post to Cooking, as that did not show up on the lists.

You need to be in that forum to search. Once you enter the search request in the box provided, there is a drop down of various places you can look but the very top one will always be that specific forum and hitting enter will take you to the relevant list of discussions.

I do this all the time and the results are excellent. IMO, it doesn't need any fixing....you just need to know the way to do it!

Gardengal, that doesn’t work for me. My search experience is like Lars’. I wonder if it is device-dependent?

Thanks Sue and asm. Ohiofem, you've made some interesting comments over time. I think Sue meant you could search for anything, including a user, because this formum doesn't yet have a "see all posts by user" function. It happened to me that I posted once some time after I started a certain plant, later lost the start date, unimportant at the moment, but then the plant became important and I was able to search and find the date here and confirm I had gotten a fresh tomato to eat from seed in under 100 days ;-) Seysonn, I agree but sometimes searching the whole site brings up stuff that is unrelated. I've never liked the search function and use Google's instead for here. Maybe it can be improved though which would be nice to be able to include/exclude terms for a more specific search. Example: Hillbilly pH Before you got everything with either, so tons of soil and hydroponics stuff showed up, but I only wanted to see if anyone said anything about the pH of the Hillbilly tomato pulp. Here's what the help (on searches) says: Formating Your Query To find records which contain all of your search terms: This is the default and requires no formating on your part. If you search for red roses all records that contain both the word red and the word roses, in any order, will be returned. To find records which contain any of your search terms: If you separate your terms with or, all records containing either term will be returned. For example, if you search for red or roses all records that contain either the word red or the word roses will be returned. To find records which match an exact phrase: If you surround your search terms in double quotes, only those records containing that exact phrase will be returned. For example, if you search for "red roses" all records that contain the word red followed immediately by the word roses will be returned. Tamara- Too many results wasn't the issue-I only got 2 results. It appears the search only looks in the body of the text and doesn't find one's user name unless its in the body of the text. This was the thread I was looking for which mentioned turtlehead. Searching on tsugajunkie turtlehead (stop laughing) will not find it because my user name isn't in the text. GW used to be able to find it. tj

Thanks all. I HAVE done what rob333 suggested, and somehow when I select latest, I swear it then forgets what I am searching for and just brings up the latest posts on any and every forum. Honestly, I have also searched on google with those keywords as well- to no good end. I appreciate the suggestions, and will try them all ((AGAIN)). I do remember when the search function on this site used to work properly so I guess that adds to my frustration.

Well, that's always a possibility :-) But on my laptop running Windows 10, it works consistently for me 100% of the time.

But everyone seems to have very different experiences with this site depending on the device and browser used. I just almost never encounter any difficulties. But I am also firmly on the GW side of the platform, never Houzz.

Works as gardengal described on my PC and iPad, but not via the mobile interface for iPhone.

Pretty sure all the same features are not available across every platform.

When I'm on my desktop, my experience is just as gardengal describes, and it's the same on my Android mobile phone. Maybe it's an iOS thing? FWIW, I do not use the Houzz app, but my Chrome browser. Maybe it's a browser thing?

There's also 'find in page' search, which may be an option...

I was very well aware of how to do it and have been doing it since forever, but today it did not work for me. It always worked for me on GW, but since I can no longer access GW and am forced to use Houzz, it does not work for me. I'm using Firefox and Windows 10 on a desktop computer.

Thanks, Carol, for suggesting Chrome. It does work for me on Chrome, and so I guess I'll have to start using that browser for GW, since I cannot access it on Firefox.

Each of our gw / hzz probs and frustrations are so different.

I had to drop chrome for this site and switch to Firefox.

Confirmed the issue with logging into houzz.com on a PC using Firefox.

I've had trouble logging into gardenweb at various times. This link from my bookmarks always works via Opera (based on Chrome) and Firefox on a PC running Windows 10. No idea whether it will work for you, but it's worth a try.
