How do you distinguish varieties within a row?

If you grow, say, 20 varieties of beans within a 100' row, how do you mark or label where each one begins and ends? I try to make sure to alternate seed colors and types, and I always use a map, but it gets tricky when planting unfamiliar beans. I'd like to have a visible method that shows where one variety stops in a row, and new one starts.

The best thing I can think of is to pound a short stake in the ground every 10' with a number on it. Then on a map write the number and what's planted after it. I just wonder if y'all have found a better method?
