Help! Can a recessed medicine cabinet be surface mounted?

I bought a recessed medicine cabinet before I realized that it cannot be recessed because of the water lines. We love the style and cannot find a surface mount like it. Can a recessed medicine cabinet be converted to surface mount? If so, any suggestions how we do that? Thanks for your input in advance!

It depends on the actual model and how it is supposed to be attached. You will also have 4 unfinished sides that would have been hidden in the framing. You could probably have a wooden frame made to cover those sides, or a mirror one made by a glass/mirror fabricator.

Just make sure you take into account how the door is hinged and what clearance it needs to open fully. Some cabinets designed for surface-mounting may not open properly when recessed.

Thanks for your thoughts.fori, I think it will overwhelm, my DH doesn't and the salesperson at the bath/plumbing supply company tells me oversized cabinets are the style! It is a 10x10 bathroom, with a 78 inch vanity on one wall. The cabinets are 24x33, 5 1/2 in. deep...just seems way too big to me. I don't need the storage, we're having an antique-style linen closet built for the other wall that will have plenty of storage. pricklypearcactus, the "window framing" was just what our GC was going to do for our recessed cabinets in the other bathroom! I just wasn't sure if the construction of a wall mount would allow it to be recessed....guess we'll have to go look at them (we're keeping them stored at the supply co. until we're ready for them).

I forgot to spec a recessed cabinet for the guest bath. I will put one of those surface mounted cabs from RH or similar in there. So now, I am looking for a light fixture that extends beyond the trim on top of the cab (5-6"). (No room for fixtures on the sides, unfortunately.) I don't want something overly stylized because the faucets are very plain. And I know I can get something from RH or a custom-depth fixture made by Rejuvenation, but I would rather pay less than 175 if I can. Any clever ideas? Thx!

While 'bath bars' is just one style of light fixture, if that fits your chosen style aesthetic, then you can use a piece of trim (3/4" - 1 1/4" thick, similar to door or window casings) to create a mounting board for the lights. Make it a pleasing bit larger that the backplate of your chosen fixture, and paint as the wall color or trim color in the space.

I looked at the cabinet spec and the attachment point are on the front end of the cabinet box, so you would have to make your own holes in the back to attach the cabinet and be sure that the material will hold the weight of the box + mirrored door. Also the mirrored door is 8" larger overall than the box, so how do you plan on disguising that?

I would sell the mirror and buy one designed for the way you want to use it. Any hacks will probably end up costing way more than just buying a new medicine cabinet.
