Converting surface mount medicine cabinet to recessed
Comments (1)No use in reinventing the wheel. (See Link.) If you have plaster walls with wood lathe, all bets are off. As soon as you start sawing, the old plaster starts to crack and fall apart. Comments (4)Just make sure you take into account how the door is hinged and what clearance it needs to open fully. Some cabinets designed for surface-mounting may not open properly when recessed....See MoreMedicine cabinet over vanity - recessed or surface mount?
Comments (4)If you wanted a deeper cabinet, you could recess and have some sticking out ;) too. A third option! I've had recessed in old bathroom and it was fine. I now have a new surface mounted one that just got put up this friday. I have an exterior wall in cold Iowa. It was made for me by my fab carpenter to go with an old Robern medicine cabinet mirror door I've had for 20 years (got it for free in an alley outside a design shop-she said "take it"). With the recessed and want to change the set in the future, you'd have to do major wall repair or find a cabinet that fits. But wouldn't that be unlikely? If I didn't like the protrusion, then recessed is what I'd do....See MoreSconce Lighting around surface-mounted medicine cabinet (DEPTH Q)
Comments (5)I came here looking for similar information. I have 57-in width and a 36 wide medicine cabinet that cannot be flush installed. That leaves 21", or 10.5" on each side for these petite shaded sconces. Since the medicine cabinet definitely cannot be recessed, I'm trying to figure out if the sconces are going to look crowded next to the depth of the medicine cabinet. The medicine cabinet has its own lighting, so I'm not worried about that. The sconces will be room lighting if someone isn't doing detail work at the mirror. I guess I'm going to have to prop everything up and see if I can figure this out. I'm surprised there aren't guidelines or articles out there on this situation....See Moredocellie
