a daylily and other flowers

This daylily doesn't count as our first non-species daylily open. We are still waiting for that. This one doesn't count because it was in the greenhouse and had a head start over the ones outside. I am not really sure I like Jane's Prism well enough to give it precious greenhouse space.

Bob has grown rain lilies for as long as I have known him. His grandmother gave him a start of the zephyranthes.

This is another type of rain lily called habranthus. These did not come from his grandmother.

We love coreopsis or tickseed. This is a new one we found this year called Cruising Route 66.

Many of the old roses we grow are not identified. Years ago Bob read that many old roses were rediscovered and then identified by people looking through old cemeteries. So we went through all the old cemeteries we could in our county. We found some old roses and either dug a sucker or took cuttings and rooted them. Then we tried to identify them. Some we could but most we had no clue what the name could be. Sadly, most of the those roses are gone from those cemeteries with the heavy handed application of roundup to cleanup the grounds.

I don't remember where we found this one but we believe it to be the one that grew at my house when I was a kid. My mother and grandmother were irritated because it draped over the walkway at the side of the house and my grandmother always cut it back to the ground every year. One year it didn't come back.

This rose was purchased. It is a climber called Alika.,

This rose was collected from the cemetery where a lot of my relatives are buried. It is no longer there.

This rose is called Violette. The flower is quite small. It was not collected either.

Here is a Mister Bluebird seedling trying to climb a tree. The red in the front was collected on a roadside.

The old roses are lovely and most have a wonderful scent. Unfortunately, the flowers don't last long.

It looks like we might have a dip seedling open in about a week. Scapes are appearing all over the garden.

I love your story about collecting the old roses. I believe they are worth saving and have done the same thing for two old ones found in cemeteries no longer kept up and totally overgrown. And yes, most have a most fragrant scent. Looking forward to your blooms!!

If it is extremely sandy you will need to amend any beds that you want to grow flowers in. The sand will not hold moisture or nutrients. I did not add peat to my beds last fall when I first started gardening in the sand. It was a HUGE mistake. I added a good deal of something called "eggshell compost" and then this spring I added my own compost that I had made last fall. It has not helped with moisture retention. I will redo all my beds this fall, adding peatmoss as well as some heavier soil. I am also planning on making a series of raised circular beds where nothing seems to grow. A soil test will also help to show what your ph is as well as your nitrogen, etc. Our county extension office offers this for free. Once amended the sand plus peat, compost should make a very good growing medium but will require some work. You might have a sandy loam though already. Check out your neighbors gardens and talk to them about what they have done. If you have sandy loam you do not really need to do much I don't think. I have almost complete sand in most places. If you don't have access to a good water supply do yourself a favor and add the peat moss to your garden beds, it has no nutritional value but does not disappear into the sand like compost does since it decomposes very slowly. Just a lovely garden, thanks for posting your pics. I have a red that makes a huge clump and it is getting ready to bloom. I don't know what it is because the tag is buried in the clump LOL I never removed it LOL Think I got it from Marietas a few years back. I will post pictures when it blooms. Dot

I agree with 'more space is better', because my garden is the opposite and it is becoming a mess. The very close DLS along with the blasted thistles from the seed that blew in from the fence rows dividing the farmer's fields have me continually pulling weeds. My DH retired this spring and he is helping me a lot, but the garden is 'my baby' and really my responsibility, and I am not retired. We have a 100'+ bed anywhere from 15' - 30' wide and we already went through it once and pulled, pulled, and pulled some more. I also used mulch last year. Tomorrow I plan to cut the thistles off at ground level and spray the stem with Round Up. I do not like to use chemicals, but I hate the thistles more. I pulled some early in the spring, but you hardly ever get all the root. And to make it more disturbing, my DH saw a snake. #*&*@%$#$%^&**!!! I am sorry I made a short story long, but when I first planned my DL bed I had staggered rows and the DLs were 30"-36" apart. BUT, I couldn't resist the offers on the Lily Auction and ordering from vendors (all because of the beautiful photos here)so my DLs became 15" or so apart - not a good idea. A person would think having them this close together would create so much shade that the weeds would not grow, but that is something someone made up. : ) Take heed, and use annuals as ground cover. When I first joined the National Rose Society in the mid 80's, a group called the Rose Rustlers was active. They did just what you did and went to cemeteries taking cuttings of all the old roses they found in order to save them. They seemed to have as much fun socializing as "rustling".............. Invariably plants with memories attached have more value to us then some rare exotic from the nursery. I know you will enjoy those roses for years to come.............Maryl

I live rain lilies, not many plants that bloom on and off all summer. Surprised more people don't plant them. Your rose are lovely, doesn't it make you feel good to find one like your grandmother grew? I don't think I have ever been in a cemetary with Rose's growing, what is it with Houzz that makes rose into a name, until this time?

I do like Jane's Prism but can understand your hesitancy to give up greenhouse space for it.

Lovely pics and never heard of "rain lilies". Will look them up.
