Re rugs: if you wanted to save $ a faux animal print could go in the living room, and the natural rug under the dining table. I think to reduce tripping the faux animal hide would need to be kind of large.

Dani thats a gorgeous room and rug. Grt ideas. Will def do faux hide. Its hard to find them in over 5 or 6 ft tho.

Let’s refocus on room purpose. You spend all your time at the back of the house where your entrance, kitchen, dining, and TV areas are. What activities will be drawing you and your daughter into the front room? We are making this room usable for you and your daughter - not staging it for a photo shoot.

Marylut, I have been thinking the same thing. If nothing else, this room is a good receiving room or an "away room" for alone time or quieter activities away from the family room. The pieces that are there now do allow for some flexibility later on (office, homework table, entertaining, relaxation room, games, crafts).

Marylut entrance is at front. This front area is to be used for respite just as Dani mentioned. Gosh Im trying not to make it look staged. Which portion of the current plan/s made you feel that way (like it is a photo shoot?)

Specifically, wd like to use for: reading. (Need ottoman), games (need better light over table than now)

Ninja, thanks for explaining the room purpose and clarifying furniture still needed to make this room work for your lifestyle. If you went “shopping” in your own house and looked carefully at everything you own, do you have anything in the right decor style and size for the foot rest? Reading lamp? Book shelf? Games storage? 4 comfy chairs for the game table? Art? Or does it all go on the search list?

Clarification— the big brown table will BE the games table.

I do have a storage bench that may work as ottoman but my daughter loves sitting on it with the white (fam rm) table so may be a lost cause. Im imagining something jute-like for an ottoman in liv room anyway.

For your Edgy vision, would you consider painting the window trim black? Replacing the door handles? Putting the cement fireplace in this room?

Could ottoman double duty for the games storage also maybe?

I want the cement feature (just an idea, not a real fireplace, maybe that’ll be wallpaper too? Lol) to stay in fam room to go with my light grey couch.

Hi, Ninja, clarifying lighting math for you, if the room is 24 x 15, you need 9 60-watt bulbs over brown table and 9 more bulbs in living area. If your star ceiling light has 2 60-watt bulbs you need way to many lamps to get 7 more bulbs.

In addition to getting enough light, you need to consider the right size ceiling fixture - too big or too small will feel “off” to you. Trade Winds star light (small is 17” wide and big is 18” wide) is big enough for a 8x10 foot room and yours is much bigger. Maybe adding recessed lights around the perimeter and in hallway would do the trick?

Or instead of recessed lights, contemporary track lighting like in the photo Danielle posted?

Look very closely at the lighting in this room, Sputnik chandelier lighting the table, recessed lighting In corners, spot lights showcasing the brick wall. If you don’t get the room lighting plan right, it will feel “off”.

I am not a lighting Pro, but a lighting plan with general, task, and ambient layers might look like this, and have lights on dimmer switches.

Or with track lighting like Danielle’s post.

Here is a version with 2 smaller flush mounts in living area. I don’t have room measurements, so try this with your mock-up program.

I understand re lighting but i will have to see what this will cost. Junction boxes, even MOVING them, and wiring, and electrical work are pricy items. People forget that when thinking “ill just put in a chandy and few high hats!”

Also note i do have the giant chandelier in the foyer but i cant show in the mockup :/

I like the chocolate brown trim for windows! Adds some of the edginess you want.

(When the windows are so dark, imo they almost become a focus point... Distracting from the table, chandy, art in the room)

I like the black trim windows with this brick wall, but black trim may not work overall with your tile floor and glass block window.

​I vote for your Iraida or the gold one. Update: just read up on safety with this style rug and found it slides more on carpet than wood or tile. You might want to use it alone in the living area. It did suggest a rug with a "dense pile."

Can you eliminate any rugs as out of your budget? How long do you want the rug compared to the sofa? Can you eliminate the 4” rug as too short.? Will the 7 ft rugs be too long or just right? If you want to feature the games table as the only dark brown color in the room, do a tan hide by the sofa. For safety, get rug tape to keep the hide from slipping. Will an ottoman rub off the hide decoration?

What do you think of this style of ceiling light? It would provide enough lighting and is dimmable.

Unfortunately the ottoman is too short. My leg still gets swollen so i def need at least “seat” level footsool.. Style wise i was looking for a natural texture.. but i only see “water hyacinth” which is ok but doesn’t generally come in a darker brown which i need to match dining table :(. Thoughts?

Marylut i want the rug abt 2/3 length of sofa. 4 ft may be too short. These rugs seem to come in 3 sizes that aren’t vastly different. The price point of these types of rugs is fine as they are faux. :). Im thinking by tan we are talking abt the beige one. Thats the lightest.

I think that light goes with your Sputnik, based on at least 2 elements being the same (geometric, contemporary, silver/chrome finish), but the opinion that counts is yours. Is the Sputnik junction box located in exact center of the room, or off center or more in the living space?

I stepped back into The room and marinated for a while. The white chair/s look odd to me. Anyone else too?

Is it the style? The chrome? The shade of white? Where they are in the room?

​Hello, I have been busy with some other things. I think your white chair will look great in there when the room is finished and a little more chrome is repeated elsewhere. Rustic modern can look like this.

Re: white chairs— i think it a the style. Like they’re SUPER modern ….rt? Sofa cd be called transitional leaning to ward modern so it works ok but the chairs….?

Took 2 stacked spheres type mercury glass floor lamps my neighbor was discarding. Figured lemme try. One in this room and one in my fam room.

So sorry to hear about your foot, yikes, difficult to be a ninja with a swollen foot. A great opportunity to score 2 free lamps! Believe in your vision - second guessing is common when changes get underway but room is sorta empty. You still have padded chairs, boxwood living wall, hide rug, side table, pictures coming so it is too early to decide what works and what doesn’t.
