I like this thread. It makes for interesting reading. I also did the babysitting jobs throughout school. We lived in the country and our neighbors were part of a small band. So, my hours were to the wee hours in the morning. I got paid 85 cents an hour and I still remember that they owe me about $20 yet (about 24 hours of babysitting!). They moved without clearing up my babysitting bill. My first paying job with real paychecks came the summer I turned 19. After I finished a year of Bible School I had 4 months before I started my dental assisting course at Red River Community College in Winnipeg. My dad's cousin owned a nursery in Brandon and so my dad asked him whether they were looking for anyone to work there for the 4 months. What a wonderful experience! In May I helped with the transplanting, then selling the annuals, houseplants, etc in the main building. Then later near the end of June I moved out to help with the trees and shrubs. I ran the tills, answered phones and when the owners went on holidays I looked after the whole place from opening up the nursery in the morning, watering plants, selling and locking up at the end of the day. One other guy was in the back working with the trees and shrubs during the holiday time, so I was not totally alone. Otherwise it was just me. I learned a lot about all kinds of plants and am so glad for that basis in horticulture. Something that I quite vividly remember is that so many people came in asking to buy 'cotton easter' shrubs. I would then turn around and let them know that the cotoneasters were such and such a price and then ask if they would like to purchase one or more. Brenda

First of all I want to Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your advice & compassion. I have been very stressed over all of this and I could feel the genuine concern you have for our situation. Just to fill in a few blanks, we are both now 56 yo. DH has his BA & MBA & a certified Project Manager. He worked AND went to school at same time. I'm afraid I am lacking in the educational department. I have 2 AA degrees in nothing marketable, & got my RE License about a month(2006) before the market started crashing-but left because of my DM deteriorating health at the time. But, actually I was the main caregiver for both of my parents from 2001 until 2007 in our home until they both passed. Dad had cancer & Mom had Alzheimer/dementia. About 2 months after my DM died (Dec '07) I started babysitting(Feb'08) for my 2 granddaughters until just this past November '09, when I started working part-time again. Can't believe I did the formula, diapers, potty-training all over again, but my girls were a good distraction from my grief. My DS & DDIL paid when the could, what they could,--most of the time, not at all, but I just wanted to help them out & make sure the girls were safe with me. It was never about the income, it was all about what was best for my GDD's. Last summer I looked into a local university here & wanted to start school to get a Gerontoloy Certificate ( would take 18 months) & eventually work in Hospice & for seniors. (Heck, I am a senior now too according to Bob Evans--lol) I guess I am just destined to be a caregiver all my life. I started the application process & was told I would probably be eligible for Finacial Aid, but I think working Full Time has to be my priority now. I've been brainstorming to think of any additional means of bringing in some income--like maybe renting out the in-law quarters of our home. Selling off some jewelry--only about $200.00 worth, but every bit has to help. We're down to 1 car which we "juggle". Right now, everything just seems up in the air. We might know more by this week-end, when either my DH's project goes well or comes crashing down & him with it. I am preparing for the crash down, because in the past few weeks, anything that could go wrong, has gone wrong. Like servers going down for hours, connection problems etc. One manager just walked off the job, because he said he couldn't take the pressure anymore. So, Thank you, thank you, thank you, all for taking the time just to let me talk/write about this & for listening. I know there are those here with far worse problems (health etc) & my problems are miniscule compared to theirs, but I thank you again for your suggestions & support. God Bless ~~ katclaws

Gosh, I feel like I'm not holding my end up this time. Although I've had good & bad jobs with this company over the million years I've been here, this one's been the best. Here's why: we are almost totally self reliant, meaning we get to decide for the most part which jobs are a priority and which can wait a bit. Only one fuction do we sometimes have to 'farm out' to another entity to complete our work and that comes into play maybe 50% of the time. All of us are consientious; if someone calls in sick the three others look in the database to see if any work is assigned to that person, asigns it to themself and does it - without being told. It's a 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' system based on mutual respect that works well. Really, the only bad part is that 5:35 AM alarm clock 5 mornings a week. I feel like pinching myself.

I grew up in a very, very small coal mining town. There was absolutely nothing for teenagers to do. We just kinda hung out on the main street, nowhere for shelter or even to sit. A lovely, kind lady from town that had 2 pre teens of her own, rented a small room in an abandoned theatre and opened it as an after school hangout for us. There was ice cream and soda, chips for us teens to buy, very cheaply of course. There was a jukebox, 3 smalI tables and about 12 chairs plus 6 bar stools at the counter. I was hired (a junior in high school ) to open the shop on my way home from school. I was the only one there to sell what was available and supervise my schoolmates. Weekdays from 3: 30 to 5:00 this was my job. Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 9 the lady and I ran the shop together. God bless this woman for what she did for us kids.

Forest Firefighter. Watched Those That Wish me Dead the other day on HBO Max. I read the book and wanted to go see it in the theaters but ended up on a streaming service I already had. I'm glad I didn't pay for a movie ticket for this one.

I watched The Great British Baking Show last night, so I will be Paul Hollywood's replacement - master baker and judge. Maybe I will find out how bake show judges can sample all that food and not gain a ton of weight! I wonder what happens to all the baking that is produced. One contestant baked an apple caramel pie that Hollywood liked so much that he carried off the tasting sample.

New Amsterdam here also - the most unrealistic medical drama I've ever seen (started watching because I was curious about Ryan Eggold's role after The Blacklist). Not that I've watched very many medical dramas.

I was watching something else after that, but I fell asleep and don't remember what it was...

Well, I am in good company, as I watched New Amsterdam too for lack of anything else. I almost watched a dvr’d episode of Schitt’s Creek but was too tired to get into it. Thank goodness, I’m a doctor and not Moira!

Hahaha! Louisiana Fish & Game officer. I'd be SO BAD at it!!!! Terrified of the alligators, NO clue how to use a gun or shoot a deer....can't identify fish....but too funny, love to watch the show!!

Jasdip, regarding New Amsterdam, in my opinion it is rather soap-opera-ish. I do like a couple of the characters and the situations they are involved in part of the time, but like so many series lately, it seems to get off the rails with things that are just too unbelievable in a real hospital situation.

i watched dances with wolves so i guess i'm a member of the cavalry defending defending an abandoned post in the middle of nowhere with my horse and a wild animal as my only companions. hmmm...doesn't sound so bad!

New Amsterdam: I liked several of the characters at first, thought they could continue to be interesting, but the story lines keep getting more and more silly, or fake drama-tized, or covering every popular Hollywood political theme (doesn't help that I notice everything that would never happen the way they show it) and now some of those characters are just annoying me. I've now seen all of the episodes available on free Peacock & don't think I will make any effort to keep watching.

I guess prison guard. Tv was on something about women in prison. I didn't watch it, except to glance over at it a few times, and volume was turned down, but that is the last thing I remembered that was on.

Jasdip, I do like New Amsterdam but it’s such an odd show. I think they play with time, where an episode seems to take place in a day but some things, like policy changes, couldn’t possibly play out as they do in 20 hours. It doesn’t really make sense, but I do like it. Maybe because, unlike This Is Us, I can watch it without having watched previous episodes.
