Good problem to have, but still would like any tips
Comments (8)I assume you are in a clay soil and I am in a sand soil. I have just sat in the dirt and, mostly with hand and trowel, escavated the gold. There is a tool like a hay fork but it has 6-8 tines, closer together (good luck finding one!). This will make the digging go faster, but you will have to accept the fact that some of the tubers will be pierced. These can be used at once with no problem and the others can be cured and stored...Can you say sweet potatoe pie, candied sweet potatoes, etc. I'd suggest that you start digging where you want to plant as the roots can be invasive. Have fun! I have a problem with wire worms getting into sweet poatoes, so enjoy your bounty. They are good for your health....See MoreI have great expectations for this.
Comments (28)Maybe the shaded hostas are struggling more to produce more chlorophyl. The ones in the sun get more heat obviously, but have an easier time with chlorophyl production as they don't need the amount the shaded plants do. Looking at two plants of mine, the sunnier location has larger leaves and is is growing larger. The more shaded plant is experiencing a slower growth. For my tastes my sunnier plant is in just about a perfect location with good growth and good contrast without going too green. Believe me, there is no real difference that would be obvious, but there is a difference in sun exposure. I would not have guessed that the small amount involved would make a noticable difference...but it seems to. Everything thing I see says more sun equals greater contrast and more growth. Excessive sun causes bleaching and burning out. The shadier the spot the more color with less contrast and slower growth. Each plant and each location and climate is different, but I see this as a general rule, based on my limited observation...but it seems entirely logical to me and could explain the increased leaf mortality in your shadier location. I have never noticed this in my plants. I have just pruned off the dead leaves without taking note of dead leaves per plant. Also, in your case leafwatcher, it seems your shadier plant has root competition and the sunnier plant does not, which could explain leaf casualties as well as slower growth. It would also be true that in shadier locations something is shading the plant and root competition as a rule would be greater in shadier spots. In the case of my 2 GEs the root competition, soil, plant parentage, age, watering etc. are all identical and the only difference is in exposure. Comments (24)I used to think a balanced fertilizer right off the bat was very important back when I was a green horn but that has changed with experience. Seedlings need a fertilizer higher in phosphorus for good root development IMO. Once they have a proper root system to support the plant then you can give them a balanced fertilizer. People who grow to sell are not selling healthy plants. They have lush top growth but the root system alone can't support the plant unless they are pumped up with fertilizer and watered often. I prefer focusing on the root system so that the plants can develop faster on their own and once planted in the ground they don't need constant fertilizer or watering. I also inoculate with endo and ecto mycorrhizae so they make better use of fertilizer and don't need as much added....See MoreStill having problems with our Fisher Paykel ovens
Comments (4)No problems like that. Have you spoken with Fisher and Paykel directly? When I did self-clean the porcelain interior showed flaws and chipped off in places. I expect my new oven on Tuesday. First I sent photos to the email address listed on their website, then they called me and things went from there. An authorized service man checked the damage and reported that it was a manufacturing defect, and sent them a report (by email) and they were on the phone again with me that afternoon offering the new oven. Maybe the serviceman needs to be there while you're having problems to see it. Anyway, I'd start by contacting Fisher and Paykel. If you email me through 'my page', I could give you the email of the person who's been of great help to me....See MoreJon 6a SE MA
