IMO before painting get new windows there is absolutely no point in having storm windows when new windows function much better and require no storm windows or do you mean windows required in your area for storms 2 very different type of window. As for a color I see what looks like a stone could you take a pic closer up to show those colors .A new garge door with some glass would be abig improvement and maybe even in wood but I need to know about the windows first.

What direction would you like to go? You really could do just about any color(s) you like.

Other changes you might consider are a beefier porch post, and larger lights on the garage. Not huge, but bigger.

Do you want to stay with a fairly neutral color scheme, or are you feeling you want a bigger change with darker or more vivid colors?

Most of us have a budget for such things as updating our home and if you don't want to spend money unnecessarily, decide if altering the windows or storm windows is needed or just a decor update.

If what you want is an "update" for the sake of appearance, consider addressing the "dark" front door/entry. instead of changing/replacing what works.

If you could lift the porch roof on the entry door side and create a forward facing gable with its ridge immediately beneath the window where the shed roof now begins (and, perhaps, leave the front of that gable "open"*), that would be the beginning of both creating more focus on your primary entry and giving it more light.

hen consider updating the front exterior wall beneath the front porch roof to help it be a more light and welcoming space. You could paint the siding on that wall a lighter color or replace/face that wall with a light brick or stone veneer or much lighter vertical siding -- enhancing the focus and lighter look of the entry.

Or even a fully opened single story gable.

Or enlarge and/or extend forward the upstairs gable over the front entry door to create a two story portion of the porch roof, with or without more shed roof in front of it. (Perhaps even adding a mock Juliet balcony for the upstairs window (depending upon how you do or do not want that for the upstairs room)).

Note: That second window -- storm window atop a traditional window -- can actually be a security aid in that an intruder forced to get through two different windows can make more noise and give you more warning of his presence. Unless you are having condensation or heat exchange issues with your current windows and storm windows and/or unless you particularly want some added convenience of double pane windows (about opening/closing or having to remove the the storm windows), then why replace your good windows and storm windows.

I think the color you have works very well with your home. What you are lacking is color. Paint your front door a pretty brighter color. Add big pots with flowers. A cute bright colored chair or two on the porch, etc.

Patricia Colwell - I hear you on the windows. The storm windows are not there because they are required. More there because they still work well, aside from the frustrations I have with opening and cleaning them. However, I am going to have someone come take a look and give a quote. Patricia, I did attach a few pictures of the stone on the entry way.

Jinx, I love the colors in the picture you attached! I'm a little torn between the neutral colors and the more vibrant. I am attaching a couple of pictures of home colors I like...one neutral and one more vibrant. Neither has grabbed my attention as much as the one you provided though.
They are both missing something. Appreciate the opinions considering the house design that I have.

Suezbell: Yes, I agree that the front entrance needs some attention. It is dark and kind of closed off. I probably wouldn't be able to do a lot of construction updates. But, could work on lightening up the colors to make it more welcoming.

I would not base a new color scheme on old storm windows. Can they be painted or replaced with new storm windows? Changing them opens up a whole new range of colors that will look great with your stone. Picking two or three new colors from the stones' lighter warm colors will lighten up the house quite a bit. Buy some big foamcore boards and paint a few samples, then move them around the front of the house.
