You may be correct, Jeri - Peace has to have been cloned in commerce zillions of times. I feel so lucky to have several roses which are one time clones of the old old plants which were here when we moved in 32 years ago - some of which were much older than this one!

Very colourful buds as you said, and they contrast nicely with the dark-ish foliage. I did enjoy looking at them - so pretty. I wonder if the people who say they 'don't like Peace' have only seen newer and less vibrant/vigorous clones...

I wish we still had the 'Like' button for showing appreciation of original posts, as opposed to just comments. Sometimes I'm just not up to composing coherent comments, but would like to thank the poster for sharing, especially when they've gone to the trouble of posting photographs...

That is a gorgeous peace rose! Is it grafted? I love the pink in the blossoms. A lot of people market it as a yellow rose when it is really pink and yellow, that drives me crazy! How do clones become less vigorous? I have heard this before and I believe it but why does it happen?

It is on its own roots. I am sure of that, because I rooted it!

It is only the buds which have such dark/bright colors. The open blooms are mostly yellow, but of course also have pink on them. Here is a pic of some on my bush:

There are people on here who could probably explain exactly why some very famous/popular roses have "declined in commerce" - I am not one of them, but I think it has to do with the fact that they were cloned so many times.

Jackie I have always been jealous (a very rare shade of deep green envy) of your roses, but especially Schmidt's Smooth Yellow (Eugenie or George, whoever it really is) and your glorious Peace. These photos just make it worse. It's almost enough to tempt me to hop a plane and go rose rustling...ahem.

@jacqueline9CA that's awesome you rooted it yourself! I have heard peace is a great rose own root that will hold it's value over the years.

I am a first time rose grower this year! I am loving it. I decided to be cheap this year and buy mostly bagged roses and I bought 6 and 1 died. 3 blue moons (1 died), 1 tropicana, and 1 spartan. I knew what I was buying going into it, usually they are mystery and very unhealthy. I brought them back to life and now I have on average 5 inches of new growth on them. I then got some grade 1 roses that were in small pots. 1 is a mystery (broken pot no tag) and the other 2 are "prairie princess" and "love". I am a huge believer in positivity when it comes to plants, I look at every plant with a positive attitude and treat them with TLC and 9/10 times they come back to life (most of my stuff is rescue!). Almost everything in my garden is low grade (like the bagged roses) or just plain rescue. I will give a home to almost any plant under the sun.

GardeningTeenager - I love that you rescue roses and other plants! Many of my best roses were ones I saw next to the sidewalk on my walks around town, and took cuttings to root. (twice the rose in question had been totally eaten by a hedge, and only one little cane was sticking out of the hedge, with a bloom on it, for example). So, in addition to purchasing them, you might want to think about taking walks around your town and looking for them. Neglected plants which you find near you, which are still growing and blooming turn out to be the best ones because they:

1) Have survived in your climate with little or no care.

2) Are free

3) Like your climate a LOT - I have found that that is the main "secret" to growing happy roses.

Rooting roses is easy - it just takes some time.

Where do you live, approximately? Once we know what type of climate you live in, folks on here can make recommendations for types of older roses which would do well. Really old roses tend to be easier to grow (no spraying, for example, and sometimes even hardly any pruning needed, etc.).

So far it sounds as if you have started very well on your gardening adventures - it is a lifelong hobby which will bring joy to you for your whole life,

Thank you so much for your kind words, indeed rescuing plants is my favorite hobby! I actually have a few cuttings I rooted. The soil where I live is very sandy and it is perfect for cuttings. I just stick them in the dirt with some rooting hormone and they root due to the great drainage! I am in zone 6a. We have mildly humid summers but it's never humid for more than 3-4 days at time. My yard is a bit sandy but it isn't that bad, roses like it a little due to the drainage. I have great sun and only 1 big tree in the yard. I am going to take your advice and take some cuttings next time when I go for a walk!

Gardening Teenager - There is a great rose book which was written specifically for rose growing in zone 6 (Ohio). You might want to see if your local library or rose society has it to borrow (it is also on Amazon). It is "Right Rose, Right Place", by Peter Schneider.
