how far north do I have to move to grow gallicas?
Comments (14)here is a link I hope works to MdS...she looks pink but is described somewhere as red. I would like her if she were not red or pink. I do love the vintage site. I have their list of purples in my favorites folder. as for bourbons, I have 2 zephy's and although they are growing like crazy, those who have zephy's felt she might not bloom here. (i'm not wild for her color, I got her cuz she is thornless...another quality I love). stefanb, CdR is on my wish list for sure. the color knocks me out. I looked again at the roses I got from uncommon rose just as they closed and I think 1 is a gallica (la belle sultane) and 1 is a moss (fara shimbo). I also got a chianti on sale at ashdown. so, I have 3 I can experiment with. has anyone measured the temperature difference between below ground and above ground. it wouldnt seem to be drastic would it? michelle Here is a link that might be useful: marchioness de salisbury...See MoreHow do you manage?
Comments (39)I'm nobody to tell someone how to do things right, since right for me ain't right for you. I tried FlyLady and tired of the emails too. HOWEVER, reading through the website and some of the stuff, especially the "missions" and such, I found the "shiny sink" thing works for me. Can't tell you why, but it does make me feel better. The rest of my kitchen might be a mess but my sink looks far better than it did and that by itself is an improvement. The Zone thing isn't the best for me. But making a list and doing it from that does work for me. 15 minutes work is an improvement. PERIOD! You might not see it right away but 15 min done four times equals an hour of work and that usually will show something if you've concentrated it. Otherwise, maybe that hour got the bathroom cleaned (ok, lightly, but still cleaned), dishes washed, a load of laundry folded from the dryer and another load put in... you get the idea. So read it through and pick out what works for you, adapt it to your style and see if you can't find something to help. I'm sure most everyone can find something in there that helps them. Taking a short break to gather your thoughts and recharge your batteries is imperitive. Reward yourself. However is right for you. And yes, I agree about people who think a forum is an instant messenger or a text message. It's clumsy and not as efficient as they think. Typing "B" takes just as many keystrokes as typing "be"! Yes, it's much harder to read. I'm guilty of abbreviating too much too often but when I read the ones who go so far overboard, it slaps me back to reality. No offense, but please save it for the phone. I think you have some valuable info to share, but when you can't speak the language of the tribe so to speak, you won't get your point across. One thing that brought a smile to my face while I was deciphering the hieroglyphics, I remembered a few weeks back when my basement railing was very sticky. The humidity was up and I knew the railing was dirty. I took an orange wipe disposeable and started wiping it down and oh yes, it was black! After a few it made an improvement. Now I left a container sitting there and occasionally I'll wipe it down and take a little more. Sort of an adapted FlyLady philosophy: Keep going and catch up as you go. A little bit at a time... a little bit at a time. Oh, a little computer reminder program works well for me too, to remind me of easily forgotten recurring chores, spring/fall special chores, etc. Especially paying bills and the like, which I do online now to save time and money. I pat myself on the back for some successes: I keep caught up on laundry now. And I keep caught up on dishes. I also keep the living room presentable. That's three major accomplishments here. And now I can add a little at a time. I'm much better on dusting (thank you Swiffer dusters!) and on dusting the wood steps. They're almost to the point of being chalked up to major accomplishments. Let's see, the WetJet has made a big improvement on the bathroom floor and I've made great strides in the bathroom as a whole. Take a minute occasionally to reflect on accomplishments, take pride in them. It's a motivation for me. Along with these forums! So there's a little dirt and yes some germs around. Keeps me healthy and gives me a goal. You don't want to get too carried away. There's a thread in the laundry forum about the bacteria and the like transferred to clean laundry after handling dirty laundry! SHEESH! Let's not go overboard. My home is far from spotless, yet I don't get sick anywhere near as often as so many others who are nearly sterilized in their surroundings. I guess if I can keep it reasonably sanitary, I'll have to be happy. BTW (can't give up all the shorthand cold turkey!) these improvements had a big setback 4 or 5 years ago when I fell and broke both shoulders, an arm, a couple ribs and screwed up my back. A little at a time and learn to adapt!...See MoreHow do you manage with tiny closets & baths?
Comments (24)Ah, the "I love old houses but hate the lack of storage" ordeal...we can relate. We have an old 1920's tudor. We've expanded into our basement for more living space. We have storage on the upper beams of our garage. We, luckily, have attic space on the second and third level that offers additional storage room. Closets are small. Our roof was a complete tear off, unfortunately. Fortunately, we were able to expand an existing closet when the roof was redone, as it was previously dormered out. We expanded it into a walk in closet, which was cheap enough to do as they were already removing the entire roof. Keep furniture to scale. Overloading rooms with more furniture to add storage space is only going to make your rooms look more cramped. For that reason, I do not have a storage caddy above my toilet, especially considering my very small full bath. I would inset a new cabinet before I added a caddy, but that's just my taste and I always think caddy's appear like an afterthought. Just my opinion. My best advice if you are thinking of knocking walls out, get advice from an architect before doing so. There's nothing worse than walking into an old home with character where you can tell it doesn't have the proper "flow" to it due to bad choices and people trying to make it into something it's not. The worst is seeing a contemporary style decorating in a period home, and we've seen plenty of those in our home searches. We go through our closets annually and send any clothing we haven't worn in the past year to goodwill. Same thing with items in the house. Periodic decluttering is absolutely necessary, and the donations each year are a nice tax write off. Spring cleaning is a nice time to declutter annually. Craigslist is a nice way to advertise items for "free" if you want to get rid of them curbside, fast. Anything I've posted has been claimed within a few hours....See MoreHoses and Reels - how do you manage?
Comments (20)Yes, I think I may have contributed to/created a few of those hose discussions back in the day. Certainly I have picked up enough over the years to help me lose my mind. I have two hoses - front and back. I had one for the front which was just perfect: great pliability and great price ($2 at a garden sale). But it started to go, and replaced with a black kink-free yard sale special which leaked all over . Replaced with a new version of same from a Lowe’s fall clearout sale. It leaked at source - but found the cure was actually using two washers instead of one (the things I continue to learn). So will see this season if my $25 clearance hose continues to work. In the back, similar story. Bought a mega Costco hose which was just too much: about 4 times the length I really needed, and really quite hard and tough - it was a struggle to unwind the thing. Got something off another yard sale which is more pliable at least, and seems to be good quality. At one point I did a culling of all the excess hoses I had built up and I think there were 4 or 5 that I ended selling on Kijiji LOL....See Morestillanntn6b
