Why is my new mahogany door so striped and what should I do??

Replaced our old front door with a new mahogany. Is a mahogany veneer. This is what it looks like after three coats of clear spar varnish - no stain. I was not expecting it to look quite so...yellow zebra-like. Let’s be honest, it’s hideous. I’m not sure why whoever made this door selected such different colored wood. That said, the variegation wasn’t obvious when the wood was raw. Not sure what to do. Will it even out over time? Should I contact the seller and ask for a new door? The door faces north and there is a roof over the overhang so there is never any direct sunlight on it. Picture is from inside but outside looks the same.

Please help!!

Whoops typo - meant to say there is a roof/overhang over the landing. Here is a photo from outside. Looks even more like a yellow zebra 😫

Unfortunately it's wood and that's what wood can and does do sometimes. I have my doubts that that is Genuine Mahogany as that is not a pattern that I have seen. Blonde streaks in Mahogany is generally a Sapele. What was the door marketed as being made from? Whom was it purchased from and who is the manufacturer?

What variety are you growing, and how are you feeding them? A three year-old bed should have some skinny ones and some larger ones, too, as the season progresses. I'd harvest sparingly this year and feed them well! There is another possibility in addition to variety size and fertilization results. Asparagus crowns migrate to the surface of the soil over time because the new crown grows on top of last year's crown every year. Asparagus beds should be maintained so 3 to 5 inches of soil covers the crowns. Crowns that are cultured too shallow yield spindly spears. http://www.weeksberry.com/ASPAR.HTML So even if you originally planted them at the correct depth, maybe the crowns of the plants are now too shallow to produce thick stalks. I envy your being able to grow them. I've grown them when I lived near the coast and they were like weeds in the sandy salt-flavored soil, but I just haven't wanted to prepare this heavy Georgia clay soil for asparagus. Maybe they'll surprise you with larger stalks a little later!

I'm in my mid-40's and only married 3 years. I met DH when I was 40. I like to tell him that if I had to wait this long for him, he was worth it! 1.We match up very well personality wise (though he is introverted and I am extroverted--like islandgal said we balance each other out). 2. We have similar modest family backgrounds, and we both put ourselves through graduate/professional school, so when we met it was almost like we'd known each other. 3. LOL, he was right when he said white for the paneling in the kitchen without realizing there are literally 100 shades of white. He also insisted on granite slab for the countertops. 5. He's not handy, but he at least knows that. We are happy to call professionals for things beyond our capabilities, which is pretty much anything beyond painting. He never had pets and took on me with three cats after we got married. He was at my side when we had to put one down a couple of weeks ago due to kidney failure. He truly loves me for who I am. He likes a woman with curves. Enough said.

What you have is a whip - a very young tree with not yet any lateral branches developed. The suggestion you received is pretty standard for newly planted whips and is worth following as it encourages the development of a strong branch system. And that's were the fruit will grow. What you want to do is make a heading cut where you want the branching to begin and just above one of the buds. You do not need to take it down as far as they said - that is normally the practice for semi-dwarf or larger growing trees. And you don't want this tree to start to set any fruit until it develops a proper habit with some branches and a basic structure. So remove any flowers for at the least the first few years. And you should continue pruning in subsequent years but not in this same manner. This is pretty much a one time shot. You might want to research apple pruning or maybe a local nursery or your extension service has classes you can attend. Apples need routine, preferably annual, pruning to stimulate and encourage the development of fruiting spurs or those little nubby protuberances that the fruit grows on. 6-8' is really short for a dwarf apple. I'm thinking this is a mini dwarf, which only get around 6' tall - dwarfs typically get about 8-10'. Do you have another apple for cross pollination?

In our coastal Virginia climate when we need a custom wood door that will stand up to the weather we choose mahogany--even for paint grade doors. I would normally say it's a crime to paint a mahogany door, but I'll make an exception for yours.

Unless you can get a replacement, I would paint at least the exterior a solid color, even though, it isnt what you really wanted. I have never seen mahogany stain streaky like that. The door itself is very nice.

You could stain this darker to try and even out the color but it would always bug me that they didn’t even try to line up the grain pattern in the top panel with the bottom panel!

It is always a better choice to use solid wood for an exterior door...in your case there are no exterior wood features so painting the door would be the most practical solution for a veneer door...it would be tough to pick a decorative color for the door in this situation...so matching the white trim or picking a color from the stone colors would flow best...

I do think the stripe effect is a direct result of using veneer...not a stain effect..even if it was not already clear coated it would have taken an artistic colorist to even out the color successfully...

Veneers tend to split when painted without the right oil based primer sealing them first. Mahogany also has oils that will bleed through. You need something like CoverStain.

As to the interior finish ..it appears your floors are multi shades also ...so it may work to leave that side in the wood finish ...if so i would go with a smaller less decorative doormat to allow the coordinating floor match to show more
