Sorry to hear that. When I lived in Maryland, I never had a breba crop. Not one fruit, ever. It was hard to just look at all that green growth until August. But then.... it was all worth it.

Now I only have one variety (Kadota) that gives me two crops. I guess I should have checked before planting!

You know, I guess if I ever move south, then I will be excited with a hobby like this. You are right, 2 in one season there and none here. Even if I did get a few fruit, they don't even ripen on time due to unusually colder weather that moves in earlier and earlier.

Last year I was lucky. Summer left late and I picked over 100 figs off my in ground tree because of it.

That same tree is not even showing signs of growth because of the cold ands here it is heading into June. Even if it was to fruit, there just won't be enough time to fully ripen. 3 short months now. Last year at this time I already had breba on it. I was lucky, I call it that.

Yes, you can say time is running out for you guys, already... Let's just hope you get a nice hot summer and things will move along quickly. We've been in the 90s for the last few weeks, so I'm so over it :)

My biggest issue is the wind -- very strong and very dry, blowing for days. Hard on those big leaves. You can see in the pic they are torn all over. But I know, I shouldn't complain...

Meyer Mike, when did you take your fig trees out ?

Meyer Mike those of us in cold zones and growing in containers must do the fig shuffle.

Here in zone 5 -abcdefghijk what ever latest letter is assigned by the powers that be many figs do ripen before seasons end.

Have had my share of the long seasons ones as well including black madeira which i have many pics of ripe figs .

But every thing is not rosey as fig plants sometimes die in storage and or split there trunks , lost 2 this year a norie de barbentane and hardy chicago luckily those has backups.

Lost our Black Madeira that was about 12 years old a season back now have another .

Hardy chicago inground was killed by ants it was an experiment good while back to see if it would survive well it did even that so called polar vortex season have pics as well. ; )

That inground always woke late but did ripen figs by seasons end that were quite good just not all of the figs ripened in most years due to it waking up late in our cold springs.

Meyer Mike if you want ripe figs and grow in containers doing the fig shuffle is a must if you have the storage facility and the will to do it on the needed timely basis.

Each season is different some easier than others and some long and drawn out such as one we are having here in my area this season.

Ok everyone.

They start leafing out as soon as my unheated sunny porch starts warming up at the end of March.

I don't do the fig shuffle unless there is going to be a killing frost and maybe that is it. I don't bring them inside on cold nights unless it gets frosty so the cold slows them down?

I just leave them outside.

The one in the ground is slow to come back because the ground is still very cold. I guess as soon as we can get regular days above 70 and nights over 50 then it should take off. It is just so darn delayed this year..Ugh.

The cold can slow them down or even set them back as in stalling them from growing for a while depending on how cold temp they experience.

Also

in our area Breba figs are snapped off soon as identified so the plants can concentrate on growing and setting a main crop to ripen later and not have to put energy into ripening breba figs.

Some older fig tree, Due to growing cycle, It needs a lots of stored energy to fully ripened many main crop figs, They need a month of restore energy cycle using photosynthesis, If It doesn't happen, They will not have breba. My brother has a fig trees, When tree was young, tree had a mid size of breba crop and main crop never ripened, After 20 year, Tree is able to ripen a large main crop at October, However, It doesn't have any breba now.

Just leave it, If no breba, Main crop will appear a lots of earlier. you might still get main crop fig

Mike - my ponderosa arrived this morning. I'll attach some pictures of the unboxing and the plant itself. I have a couple of questions for you.

1) it's in a small pot - should I repot and if so, what soil do you recommend?

2) one of the pics shows a stem which Logees clipped off, in order to make a single stem. Should I continue to leave it as a single? The cut portion is already throwing out a leaf so I would think it wants to grow.

3) I'm going to place it in the GH now. It will recieve a very bright light, but no direct sun. Can it eventually be plaved in direct sun once it's acclimated?

Overall the plant is super healthy. I'm very impressed with it, although the shipping, because I wanted 2 day, was the cost of the plant itself! Ouch, but I don't trust the USPS with anything any more.

I'm just now picking the first of the Negra Figs. There is a heavy breba crop on both the Negra and the Italian Honey. I'm hoping our super HOT weather this weekend won't ruin them. (Fingers Crossed!)

Maybe you people can help me. I live in eastern PA and my fig plant is just putting out leaves! How do you get such early crops? I'm not sure of the type, whatever HD sold. Thanks.

I do, my plant sits facing south, but if it's heat they like, I can put it on my deck, which also faces south and the temps get above 90-100 on any sunny day.

They're in a large pot, but a daily watering will keep them nourished. I'll move them in the morning.

I'm in Central CA and my figs are in a side yard trying to keep cool right now. I said earlier that i have a large breba crop, but I'm finding that many aren't any good when ripe.... very dry and fibrous. I think it's the over-the-top heat we've been having... and will continue to have for the rest of the summer. Too sad because I love my figs when they are soft, gooey and sweet.

Kate, I'm in the same situation. Our triple digit temps arrived a couple of weeks earlier. Add insane winds to the mix ("blowdryer weather") and my figs are turning leathery and dry before they're ready to pick. 😒
