Hi Houzz....seeking curb appeal !!!
Im looking to make my backyard and side yard more appealing until we repave the yard. I’m looking for 1. Plants to grow upwards to cover that chain linked fence
- Plants to add greenery next to the plumeria plant (east facing, southern cali)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!

Comments (55)What term can describe the result of this extra effort for this first view of the front of a property? As used above, I would just simply call it the front garden. I think there is a bit of west coast vs east coast different pages thing happening here too. Yardvaark's observation that plenty of people put all their effort out front and have a dog patch out back they would never dream of inviting guests in to is completely valid. Outdoor privacy, found in the back yard not the front, and privacy in general was valued a lot more out west. Much like 'foundation plants' had a certain ethos and design style associated with it, 'curb appeal' these days does too. Inkognito's original question way back at the height of the housing frenzy before the crash was "Is this whole notion that the only reason for working on the way our house and garden is presented is so that we can sell it on detrimental to domestic garden design? Yes it is. As the wealth of working people is clawed away from them in service to the god of vulture capitalism's endless greed for growth and profits, homes are ever more considered their last available investment and asset that will likely have to be sold off for people to survive their decrepitude with any amount of dignity. They can never really expect to grow old and die peacefully at home. This is an investment not a home. Not that 'curb appeal' implies completely ignoring everything else, but when it becomes a primary and most valued focus of applied residential landscape design, is it driving standard residential landscape design towards the banal beige of real estate agents wet dreams? When does it really become just another form of capitalist consumption that has to be changed out every so often like paint and wallpaper to keep things fresh? What about real homes and a sense of place? What about real gardens filled with life and individual personality? "Oh great. You have fabulous curb appeal. Do you garden?" Added: Yes you can read this as an extreme take on things. Few things are that black and white or all inclusive. It's not like the term 'curb appeal' makes my skin crawl. There is also a valid need to stage homes when they go on the market. It's more about how the ethos contained in this thinking takes hold and affects people's thinking and expectations about what gardens are really for. Comments (10)How about zeroscaping or xeriscaping for the front yard? However since the lawn is already dead, it's going to take time money and maintenance to do anything with it. So if the current tenants really don't care, you may as well save your money and wait until the day you want t sell or re-rent it. Unless the neighbors are complaining! Comments (22)It looks like you've already installed your exterior siding and colors are already set. No point adding $1,000's to re-do it. If nothing else, paint your exterior doors a color that can pop with the colors you've already chosen. Navy blue isn't an extreme color choice but will add something more than a grey or beige or brown. For more fun try turquoise, intense pink, purple, I think though you need to keep tone in mind - you already have light and medium tones, so a dark tone would complement rather than blend in. Stay away from greens and reds, unless it's a funky version of the color, like lime green... But still, that's mostly a mid-tone color. Comments (2)If you are replacing the smaller windows, can they be enlarged to match the ones on the other side? Definitely no grids for that house. Getting rid of the overly pruned bushes will do wonders for curb appeal. Is that a circular drive? Making the front beds a little deeper could help with the landscaping. PRO3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoagree w/flo. you've got to do something w/the chain link fence. is it on your side? if not, maybe check w/the neighbor to see if you can attach something to it. if it's on your side, go for it.

when you get that chain link cover, then you can bring in some potted plants:

you have that area w/all that mulch. would be better if you removed it and put down some gravel, or DG or even large cement pavers
.against the fence, do what flo showed you with large plant containers. you can't have a flower bed if it's concrete, here:
so get the material to cover the fence, and bring in some colorful planers, tall plants and line them up. (try some bamboo plants or Arbor trees)
Set these planters against the chainlink (which you will cover up w/something)
and for that mulch pit, edge it out, remove the mulch and do something w/the center area like shown in the picsor, remove a lot of that mulch and do what they did here:
