It sounds like you have oak parquet in the dining room and if it's vintage you're very lucky. (It's probably more than an inch wide.) You're right that it just doesn't 'go' with with wide plank original flooring in an adjoining room. Your best bet would be to put 2" (approx) strip oak in the kitchen over the wide plank and then finish it in place. You'll get the best results if you can refinish the adjoining room at the same time. If you have closets with enough parquet and money to burn you can have it salvaged from the closets and installed in the kitchen and then put strip oak in the closets. I have a little brownstone in Brooklyn where a couple of years ago I built a new addition and moved the kitchen into it. The rest of the house is wide plank. The new addition has 3.5" strip red oak laid perpendicular to the original 5" fir. It's not jarring and it's not trying to match. Yours will look even better.

Love the house! I couldn't quite tell what colors are in adjoining rooms, but on my monitor, your first 2 mentions above looked 'fleshy'. I consulted a designer years ago who suggested a color for my bedroom, which turned out 'fleshy' and I had to stop after one wall as it just looked awful. What did you end up going with. Would like to see a room in rhinestone.

If possible I would run the same wood right into your kitchen. But, if you really want tile or some other surface maybe something in gray tile like one of these.... I am looking at what would go with your current floors but also work with your new kitchen colors of gray and white.
