Renovating creepy HVAC closet?

Hi, all! I just bought my first place - a condo in a 1950s brick/concrete building. My HVAC and associated ductwork is housed in a hallway closet, with the staircase to the upstairs unit directly above so the ceiling is angled. It looks like the wood and plaster have fallen down over time, leaving some gaps and exposed chicken wire.

I'd like to repair this for air/pest insulation, for noise insulation, and for aesthetics - it looks old and creepy while the rest of the unit is clean and modern. I'm a DIY home improvement novice to say the least. What is the best approach here? I was thinking about rigid foam board with foam sealant? What about plywood, caulk and plaster (though that doesn't address sound as much)? What is the safest, low skill, and easiest way to make it functional and attractive? All suggestions welcome!
