AFCI Requirement for Load Side Transfer Switch

Andy Nolan

I just bought a load side transfer switch

https://www.amazon.com/Reliance-Controls-Corporation-30310A-Generators/dp/B001HX7FH0/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=reliance+transfer+switch&qid=1619317141&sr=8-7

which I will connect my portable battery generator to it and can service 10 circuits when grid goes out.

A friend of mine told me I won't be able to get it installed if I go for the permit and inspection, because in the backup mode, I won't have afci protection. He recommends I just don't apply for permit and go with it. I'm worried if I don't get permit, something catches fire, it will void my insurance, but I really don't want to put in too much more money just to be able to use this switch.

Do many people have the same issue with me? Any suggestions? How to get around that requirement?
