Red Oak Question....SJ McCarthy please advise

Hello. I've been lurking for awhile. It seems SJ McCarthy offers a lot of expert advice on hardwood floors and I was looking for his (and anyone else's) opinion/advice on a hardwood question...

We are starting a build and plan on having site finished hardwood floors. We have not picked an exact stain color but plan on a warm, mid-tone stain color with an HD finish since we have labradors. I would like to use white oak because I do not like the red in red oak, my husband (and a few other family members with some lumber/construction experience) feel that unless we were going with a light or natural stain there is no reason not to use red oak (which is less expensive). He feels that a good hardwood installer can mix stain to compensate for the redness.

Can I feel good about going with red oak? And of the mid-tone stains are there any that hide the red better than others?

Thanks!

Amy
