Seating vs. no-seating in island
Comments (27)I wouldn't worry at all about not moving in a straight line through the mudroom. You won't even notice that slight jog. We used the kitchen door exclusively which was set about 3 ft to the left of the doorway from the kitchen to the DR. It was never a problem. Not awkward at all. I can't see why you can't just move the existing cubbies. And remember as Buehl said, they don't stay little long so the cubbies may not be as important as getting a great layout. An island with seating never gets outgrown! One possibility for the pantry wall is bathroom vanity base cabinets. Sometimes they come in 18" depth then you wouldn't have to do custom. I think 18" deep base cabs with 12" deep wall cabs down the the counter would look great. If it were me and I was going to do tall cabinets, I wouldn't go deeper than 15" (I'd probably even consider 12") because stuff is so much easier to access when stored on shallow shelves. Many people have microwaves installed in the island. Looks great and seems to function well. I do believe you can get them it fit in an 18" deep cabinet; it depends on what size you use (we have a small one as we use it only to reheat beverages and snacks or pop corn). Can you fit 15" between the fridge and range? 18" would probably be better but I think 15" would work. We have 18" between the sink and fridge at it's plenty of space. I don't think it will look like too much stainless with the sink and fridge so close to each other. Were you considering moving the patio doors? If you did that, and put the fridge on that wall, it would be more easily accessed from the family room and the deck (if that's what's on the other side of those doors). I worried about putting a tall appliance next to a doorway the first time I did it, but it turned out to be just fine. I never felt like I was walking through a tunnel or anything. The swing of the garage door looks like it will function well in either direction but I think I prefer it the way it is....See MorePictures- small kitchen island with seating on end
Comments (23)Oh wow--I almost didn't open this thread today, and here's a ques for lil' ol' me! LOL Thank you for the compliment kodak1. Our kitchen is ~13 X 13. Island measurements: Width: 31.5" cabs only, granite top 33.5" across Length: 61.5-61.75" cabs only, granite top (part of which is underneath the table top) ~64" long. Tabletop is 33.5" across, ~28.5" from end to end. It sits on a little "riser" glued to the top of the island and overlaps the island by 6" (leaving ~22.5" of free space underneath). We love the set-up but certain things in hindsight: KD had specified the tabletop to be laminated onto the island granite. This was prior to my learning about laminated counters/edges on GW (in NY most granite is already 3cm, so they don't often laminate our edges). I had no clue what that meant, and the guy doing our templating either didn't know either, or didn't know how to laminate only a portion of the tabletop to the island (I think he suggested/explained that they could have extended the island counter the full length, incl the tabletop area, and then laminating another piece on top of the tabletop section, but that didn't sound appealing to us). So, we ended up with a "riser", and because we wouldn't be deciding the exact am't of overlap until they were ready to install the tabletop on the SS leg, we agreed to the riser width proposed by the templator. Had I known how much weÂd end up having the tabletop overlap the island countertop and how it would all look when completed, I think I would have had him make the riser more substantial in size. No biggie but might have tweaked a few things. Also, because of our island placement/location (we had some flexibility with it's actual location in the room by some inches forward and back and side to side in the space), and because we didnÂt want the tabletop itself to go beyond the "walls" separating the kitchen from the adjacent roomÂwe wanted it to be fully inside the kitchen space, we ended up with a smaller overhang/table than we could have. WeÂre only talking inches, but a few more inches of leg and elbow room would be very nice to have. Also, even with our making sure the tabletop is within the kitchen "walls," I sit at the end, and technically IÂm sitting in the other room when IÂm seated at the tabletop (semantics, but I am in the next room!). It works for us, just pointing out some things about which we were unaware while going through the process. As for 3 stools, there are only two of us, so it works out fine; the third stool is empty 90% of the time anyway. We have a 4th stool that we keep off to the side (next to the remaining piece of wall separating the kitchen and LR). When my parents are up visiting for example, weÂll pull the 4th stool next to the island itself (near the table end) and DH will usually sit there if we want to eat in the kitchen rather than the DR. HTH! If I can answer any more ques, let me know....See Moreisland measurements vs. size needed for stools
Comments (10)Island/Peninsula Seating.... Linear Seating Space: Allow 24 linear inches per seat regardless of counter height Overhang: Table-height seating (30" high): Minimum 18" overhang Counter-height seating (36" high): Minimum 15" overhang Bar-height seating (42" high): Minimum 12" overhang Corner Seating...if you have seats on adjacent sides, be careful that you don't overlap the leg room/overhang. Each seat needs its own leg room. So, if you have a 15" overhang on a side and a seat on the end, then the seat on the adjacent side starts 15" in from the end with the other seat so there's 15" of leg room for each. Like this: Is this what you're thinking of? If so, you should have more than enough room for 3 seats on the long side, but not enough for 4. However, I would encourage keeping that extra space for the long end b/c with legs it will not be as easy for people sitting at the outer seats to get into/out of the stools/chairs (legs get in the way) so that extra room is a real help!...See MoreCan a kitchen island seat 5 and still have a sink/dishwashwer too
Comments (9)Wow Laxsupermom - you are good !! You read my mind and yes that is exactly how it is designed. I posted a link to the layout of my kitchen - it's a little blurry but I hope you can get a good idea of it. Yes I plan on using those cabinets under the island only for xmas platters and etc, nothing for everyday use. I mainly designed this island for 2 reasons, one I didn't have money in the budget to make a nook in the kitchen for a table and two because I want the 3 kids to eat at it for breakfast and lunch and use the dining room for our family dinners. It really can seat 7 so at parties it will be okay for that reason. I suppose if I am cooking I can put dirty pots on the other counter behind the island to get them out of the way. I'm pretty much set on this design since I don't have room for a kitchen table because the small cabinets next to the patio door in the kitchen is a computer desk that we have to have since we want the kids using the internet in the main living area of the house.
