9 ft ceiling - stacked cabinet help

Hello-

For those that have done stacked cabinets what split did you choose? Kd drew up first plan w 18/30 split. I am a bit worried about these being too heavy. However with this ratio she says we can do one cabinet w 2 doors which I assume will be cheaper. I havent seen the pricing yet on a 12/36 or 15/33 which she says are doable but will have to do 2 cabinets. Any advice/ pics would be fabulous. Thx!

Do you have images? Drawings of your cabinet design? Sometimes seeing can be easier to decide.

I have 10 foot ceilings and ended up not going with the stacked. I love the look of stacked but I didn't want them to look like they were being squeezed into the space.

Thanks so much. We are getting an updated draft tomorrow. I will post then. I love the look of glass uppers! Well see what Kd thinks too. Appreciate all the pics! Soo helpful.

In my old apartment we had 9 foot ceilings and single uppers that went all the way up--the top of the doors was maybe within 4 inches of the ceiling. The cabinets must have been nearly 5 feet tall. Yes, we used a step-stool to get at the stuff on the top shelves. We kept infrequently used things up there--the electric frying pan, some nice serving dishes that tended to only come out at holidays, things like that. I remember once reading guidelines about what the maximum cabinet height should be and ours were well beyond that. But we never had any issues, even though they were ancient (not sure if they were original to the 100-year-old house, but if they were installed after the 30's I would be very surprised), and had inset doors. Modern hinges should only improve the performance.

Linelle that is an awesome idea. I am going downstairs right now to get out the paper towel! Here's mine: 9' ceiling, 36" uppers (I can't reach the top shelf now; I thought I'd never use 42" for what the extra cost would be). I have 18" gap from counter to light rail, and 11.5" above the top of the crown molding to the ceiling. Same kitchen, with my old 30" uppers:

Here's some visuals. 42" of cabinets with about 6" of molding. This only works because the ceiling is absent. IRL it would leave an awkward gap. Hi Mags...my house is almost at the drywall stage so way too late for the counterhight window but I seriously considered it at one time. I love the look. i did heed the advice of the crank out window. They are casement windows. The architect drew in 3 windows and I gave up one to get more upper cabinets. I hope I don't regret that when it's all done. we (kd) called modernaire and I'm working on a hood. We shall see. Thank you for the advice!

I know this is an old thread but I'm wondering what you finally decided on? I'm having the exact same dilemma with wanting to take my cabinets to the ceiling in my 9' kitchen. KD is encouraging the 18/30 because of the single cabinet option (Kraftmaid) but I think the ratio looks way too top heavy. I'm leaning towards 15/33, even with the additional cost. Spending a couple thousand more for cabinets I love will be a much easier pill to swallow than $30k on cabinets I regret, I think.

So we delayed the project but are back working on it. We have a new contractor and their Kd is suggesting 18/30 split. Here is a kitchen they just did. It looks ok to me

I am not a fan of the upper stack being glass doors. Of course many people love them. I will tell you my reasons why I don't. First, what do you put up there? Displays of what? And what you do put up there will be too high up for people to see them properly. Second - do you now have to pay for expensive lighting inside those glass cabinets? And if you do, realistically how often will you turn them on? Third - I like when the lower stack has the glass fronted doors instead of the upper stack. The reason is that it takes advantage of the lightness and light reflection of the larger doors of the lower stack. The upper doors won't provide that. Fourth - you can put your dishware and glasses there, and when people are over they can help themselves rather than trying to figure out where your coffee mugs or glasses are. Fifth - if you use a few of the lower stack for the glass doors, then the upper stack with solid doors can be used for needed storage, why forego that storage space.

All that being said, if you prefer the upper stack as glass, go for it! I am just giving MHO.
