Encore Azaleas suffering: Soil Ph? Too much sun? Too dry?

Hey all, I live in central KY, zone 6B. I read that encore azaleas can handle a little more sunlight than normal azaleas, especially in its northern range. So I planted some on a southwest-facing wall, with no shade, and a brick backdrop. I planted one 2 years ago and two more last year. The azaleas are alive and even blooming, but the leaves are skinny and discolored. I am trying to diagnose the trouble.

The house is new and the beds were backfilled with very heavy clay. I had the soil tested and the PH came back 7.8, which is quite high for azaleas, I believe. I have added some soil acidifier this spring to see if that helps.

See the pics below. The first one is from two years ago, showing the original one planted next to the two new, lush ones that I had just purchased. Then the next pic is a close up of one, taken just a week or two ago.

If it is a soil issue, I will work on amending things. It is a sunlight problem, I need to pull them up and find another spot.
