Kitchen remodel layout idea
Comments (29)If you are set on this design, I would move the laundry door to the kitchen so that wall does not get chopped up looking from the kitchen. You also want to push out the door to be flush with the frig and oven. This will make the inside of the laundry room a bit odd but you want the esthetics from the kitchen not from the laundry room. I would play with the placement of the door into the laundry room. Bottom left of the kitchen may work where there is already an odd jog in the laundry room. You will lose straight shot out to the back door from the kitchen, however. I would consider island seating such that you are facing out the window while eating if you have east facing window/sliding glass door. I think you have enough room. It is wonderful to eat breakfast while looking out to the morning light! I would rid of some of the uppers and lighten the space a little. The cabinet design is too filled in and heavy, IMHO. In your pictures, there does not seem to be a good way to get from the upper deck to the lower pool. Is that a possibility? You really want to be able to acess the pool and your wonderful backyard from your kitchen. Otherwise, you have to maintain two kitchens in the summer. (been there and done that, and it is a PITA!) I have a house where our upper deck does not connect to the lower level. This is the WORST design about our house! I speak from experience... We don't have enough lot to make it happen being in the city. There are always limitations to the houses we live in....See MoreWhere do I Place a light over table that isn't centered?
Comments (39)Comments on table shape: As you know, an oval table and a round table with leaves in are different ovals. An oval table is, as far as I can remember, NOT a hemisphere on each end. More pointed than that. I would look at them carefully, because your banquette will probably be hemispherical. I think a 54'' or maybe even a 60'' round will work for you in the space. With two leaves when you need to extend it. The style I would look for is a five foot round double pedestal or trestle table that could be extended with leaves. Be certain that when the leaves are inserted, the base spreads to provide a balanced top. Or, in a few tables, both circle halves move apart on glides, the leaf is inserted in the middle, and the base stays centered. (I think a pedestal or trestle table will provide better entrance clearance into the booth than a table with four legs, like the last one in the pics you posted.) I have seen antique ones like this., but not any modern ones that I can recall. Maybe someone will have suggestions. Maybe you can try out some tables in a good furniture store and see if the lop-sided extension on only one side of the pedestal is a problem. It sure is on mine. I am eager to see your finished kitchen. This is going to be lovely. Sandra...See MoreKitchen design confusion....what would a TKO do?
Comments (25)Oh, I'm so pleasantly surprised that I have responses on Easter. You are all true TKOs!! And I thank each of your for your contribution. I was going to respond to each of you individually but realized that would be a VERY long post. So I'll just try to touch touch on the main points. Even if I decide not to use a certain piece of advice, it's always worth it to read it and ponder it. Some of you have given me ideas in the past that I originally rejected but after further consideration, realized it was right. So what I'm writing here is my kneejerk response but we're going out of town on Wednesday for 12 days which will give me more time to ponder your suggestions. So it's possible I'll change my mind. It's been known to happen a few times, lol. If my kitchen isn't the ugliest, it's in the Top 10. Jillius's kitchen is bad but I'm kinda digging that hidden bar allowing you to surprise guests on special occasions with its groovy wonder. Moving the window isn't an option due to glassblocks, now covered by backsplash, that will eventually be revealed. I'm not inclined to move the sink cabinet to the right to center it as it will shrink the prep[ counter (between sink and range) and I really value every inch. Also, I never realized the cabinet was not centered on the sink during the last 44 years since the 1971 remodel my parents did on this kitchen. (Yes, I have my mom to thank for the ugliness. What was she thinking?) So the cabinet being centered really isn't an issue for me. I do agree that centering the sink in the cabinet is important so we'll be doing that. Thanks for helping me sort that issue out. I like the idea of 2 pendants. We've decided not to put pendants on the peninsula because they would detract from the new hood for the range so over this sink is really my only available option for pretty lighting. I never thought of two off-centered there so I appreciate that idea so I appreciate that idea. I also love the DIY LED light mudhouse shared. I'll play with both those ideas when the time comes and if it doesn't look right, I'll just go with flush lights there. The main thing I thank you for is talking me about of not centering the sink in the base. It was a silly idea but I'm braindead with planning and it was the best I was coming up with. I'm so glad you saved me from it. Happy Easter!...See MoreHelp! DH Resisting...Need Pics. Of Non-Centered Window Sink
Comments (44)There's no sink on the island...so that makes it inconvenient for any extensive prepping. That's why the corner will be much more useful - it has access to water and the range. No taking things out of the refrigerator, taking them to the sink, rinsing/washing, pick them up and move them to the island... The corner gives you: take things out of the refrigerator, take them to the sink, rinsing/washing, continue prepping right there... If more space can be taken from the Dining Room, then you can gain some space, but I'm not sure how much it helps the sink issue - it will not change anything on the range wall or b/w the sink and the corner. It's the window that's the issue, not the space in the Dining Room. Now, if you are willing to make major changes and the sink does not have to be under the window at all, then it might be possible to come up with something more functional... [Since you're getting an apron sink, it will be more noticeable than if you have an standard type undermount sink. However, with the island blocking most of the sight lines, it may not be an issue.]...See Moretangerinedoor
