Large single bowl non-metal sink advice?
Comments (10)Bluekit -- Actually I live in Wisconsin (DH was born in WI) so Kohler things are easier for me to get here. Otherwise, there are so many things that are easier to find on the coasts! Looks like you found some very cool granite for your countertop, for example. Lascatx -- Using my Home Designer software (but I'm not that good at using it) I tried putting an apron sink into my architect's plan. In the program that kind of sink requires a 36" cabinet, although I can't tell if that's for a 30" sink or a 33" sink or what. Anyway, it does line up better than the long 3-bowl that the architect had because the dishwasher on the right lines up with the first window and then the end of the sink cab lines up with the left line of the main window and then the left dishwasher lines up with the end of the left window. There is still room on the end for a narrow cabinet (at least 9") and I suspect part of what the architect also hated was having a dishwasher on the exposed end of the cabinet run. Does anybody know what the Home Designer apron sink dimensions actually are? I can't figure that out from the program and I know there are lots of GW users....See MoreSophie's Choice - faucet center sink not - with pics - help!
Comments (11)Davidrol Excellent question...what are we doing with all this money? New appliances, a better kitchen eating/hanging out area, and we really need more counter space...right now there is no place to land food from the stove and oven. Resell appeal is important - we will probably be moving within 5 years. I agree added counter/cabs it will make it look smaller - and I am continually balancing aesthetics vs. function. (If it were up to me I would have no upper cabinets only open shelves but DH would never go for that.) My KD is all about cabinets - I have already taken out a wall and added a peninsula where he wanted to add wall and cabinets leaving me without any in kitchen sitting/eating area. The KD insists this will look OK and you won't notice the off center...but I am not sure I will like it. I keep going back to decreasing depth of new counter to 20 inches. I know we lose the magic corner but honestly, those don't seem like they pack too much of a punch as far as storage - especially for pans which is what I need to store in that part of the kitchen. With counter cut back to 20 I can still put in two deep drawers under the new cab and get most of my pans in...also with a 20 inch counter (instead of 24) I think we could hang pans to the left of window #2 (faces street - not garden window) which I think would be out of reach with a 24 inch counter. Chana Goanna I love the idea of the soapstone sink but does soapstone come in a white color? Someone told me it is always dark....See MoreNeed Help w/Lighting Plan-DH is Bugging Me!
Comments (21)That sorta is what I'm saying. Naked bulb fixtures need to be kept pretty dim - otherwise you go blind from the stuff cast through the crystal facets. I guess I'm not thinking on it being a "working" light - closer to decorative. I don't know what size cans you're thinking about, but its not likely you'll notice them much - unless you're getting an elaborate trim? I'd be doing 3" ones. All anyone will see is the crystal lights. I would place them where they'll do the most good (over the island). The other thing for me about positioning is that the entire bar isn't lighted - it looks like the center 36-39" has the lights. Only two reasons to do wall washers - light the cabinet and light the contents of the cabinets from top to bottom. If you think the existing cans will be fine, then do that. Perhaps you can ask rhome to position them on your 3d in their actual locations and see. Your new island will need electrical outlets IN THE ISLAND and possibly the switches for these lights. They take up room! If you are required to have outlets according to current building code, the actual rule is something like no place on the counter is more than two feet from an outlet. You'll have the same issues on the range wall for outlets - which can, of course, be on the wall where the island ones need to be set into the island. Have you thought about where you'll place the wall outlets and the island outlets? You could do vertical fillers and put the outlets in that way. You could do plug mold on the ends or do some regular outlets on the ends, but I think your island may require one in the middle somewhere? Last thing I'm going to say is that the bottom of the crystal fixture will be at about 6' to 6'2"....See MoreHow much will 3' affect centering a sink?
Comments (17)Never ending, Yes, I would do it again. Even though our cabs from GD were dirty and worn, they were well-built. I did sand down and re-stain all the doors and drawer fronts, and DH polyurethaned them. Jim, our carpenter, did put new red oak veneer on two cabinets where the sides and fronts were going to be seen more, and where they looked too worn for his standards. I paid $3600 for the kitchen full of cabs, $2000 to get them to Michigan, and $4000 for Jim to make three more for my space. Other than inconsistencies in my and DH's finish work, I don't think you can tell them from new. I will never regret doing the work. If we had not done this, we would still have our old kitchen. If you can be creative and flexible in your design, and have someone in the family or a friend or a professional you know with some carpentry skills - go for it. We got our entire kitchen done - new ceiling, an added wall, a new skylight, all new LED lighting, new Marmoleum flooring... for about $17,000....See Morerantontoo
