Error message & beeping on Miele T1 dryer...

I came home last night to find my Miele T1 dryer beeping in a way I hadn't heard it beep before (one loud beep every several seconds). There was some sort of message on the display that said something like "service" or "call service" with a telephone graphic beside it.

Before leaving, I had put a load in (mostly towels) on the Normal cycle set to Extra Dry. The dryer had been beeping and displaying that message for quite some time (at least an hour or so).

My first thought was to shut the dryer off by rotating the knob to stop the beeping, which it did. Then I realized I probably should have used the arrows to scroll up or down to see if the warning message said anything more. But it's too late for that.

Does anyone know what this could be?

I dried another load of towels in my dryer with no further problems. Since it is working with no more messages, I'm tempted to ignore it. But the message must have been about something. (Also, I had recently cleaned the plinth filter, so it wasn't that.)

I've had the alarm happen if the plinth or lint filters are very dirty and someone ignored the warning and didn't clean them. I would also look at the air intake (which is just to the right of the plinth filter door) to ensure there isn't any extra dust clogging things.

@Cal Okay, thanks. I just cleaned that area out really well. I see now that both lint screens and the plinth filter are all filtering the same recirculating stream of air. I blew all of that out with a blower attachment on my compressor (including the air intake on the front of the machine). It didn't seem like there was much lint in there, but hopefully that will correct the problem. I have to say I usually don't remove the secondary lint screen. I usually just wipe away the lint with it in place. Maybe I'll start removing it every time to clean it. Do you remove it every time to clean it?

Not familiar with the mechanics of Miele but assuming they're like other dryers, the problem could be a broken belt or seized idler pulley (if the motor sounds to be running), or a bad motor (if the motor apparently isn't running at all).

Thought I'd add a quick update - the error has not returned yet. I got the error light the first cycle I ran after the repair folks came, and possibly on the load after that (can't remember for sure), but in the last 4-5 loads the cycle has been finishing up properly. The Miele repair guy actually gave me a call on Monday and wanted to know more about what was happening since he saw that I have another visit scheduled for this Friday. He thought it might have been a stored error since it happened right after they left and then appears to have worked itself out. I'm going to be running a couple more loads today and tomorrow and will cancel the service call if the error doesn't return till I see the Filter/Vent light again. Overall relieved that this is the case, but half expect the error to return after a few more loads.

@scottie mom re: NYC water softness. Not sure if this setting is changeable on the 060 but will check. Thank you! The shaking happens not at the high speeds but as the wash is slopping around at the lower speed. It doesn't last but the first time it happened, a slim bottle of detergent on the top of the dryer tipped over. The installer did not adjust the legs nor was I confident that he attached the stacking kit securely. But he used a level and said it was level and didn't need adjusting. When you say "just a bit," it's vibration you can definitely see and feel, right?

If your buying from a dealer have them sell you an extended warranty. The only concern with missing shipping struts is that if the drum is banged around enough in transporting the washer it can be damaged. This can cause the drum to be out of round. Spins may not work properly or cause a lot of shaking/vibration. That said, it would need to be a pretty rough ride to damage the drum. I have bought scratch and dent appliances in the past and been pretty happy. If the washer and dryer were used already then I would not purchase without a warranty or being able to see the washer successfully do a high speed spin. If either of those options or both are available then you would have a great deal.

The right side does not have a filter. It is the radiator to remove excess heat. we usually have to clean it about every 750-1000 hours. You will know when it is time because the dryer will say “clean plinth filter” but it will be clean.

The cover on the right side is a little trickier to get off. There is a hidden clip on the left side of this door that you need to push with Small screwdriver Or knife. It will then pop off and you will see the small radiator. usually loaded with lint or dust. We vacuum it off using the dusting attachment on the vacuum.

Then reinstall the door. If the door is dirty wash it off in the tub or a large sink and dry using a towel to get it looking new before reinstall.

Miele should have made this cover easier to open/remove. It is not obvious until you do it once to know where the tabs are that need to be pushed to remove the cover.

I would suggest not blowing it off. Vacuum would be a better choice.

@luna123456 Yes, I think you are right. Vacuuming would be better because you aren't risking blowing lint farther in. But, until your post, I couldn't figure out how to get that cover off. Thanks!

@Jim Daniels Glad to hear it's working without the error now. I rarely remove the second lint screen, just typically wipe it while the primary/top screen is removed. Agree with Luna that they definitely should have made that right intake air door easier to remove, I'm always afraid I'm going to break the tabs!

Here are some images from the parts diagrams to make it easier, hopefully, for someone else. The hidden radiator is on the right side of the machine. The retention tab for the right cover/door can be accessed my depressing the retention tab from the center of the machine and pushing in with a small screwdriver or knife. You will know when your in the correct spot by feel.

once you have the cover off, look at where the tabs are so you know where they are for the next time.

Not related to the beeping issue, but I wanted to comment when I read the OP's comments that it is never a good idea to leave the house with the dryer on. It was not clear to me that someone else was home or not from the way it was composed. When I was having a house built back in 1996 the Sales Agent for the builder told me a friend of her's house had just burned because the friend left the house with the dryer running and it caught fire. That has stayed with me, particularly since we have a dog that would be home by himself.

Fires are almost impossible in a heat pump dryer. They don’t get hot enough and their is no open flame or heating coil.

@armjim @luna123456 I just saw your responses. I was away, but, as luna suggests, I don't think there is any danger to this with the type of dryer this is. I don't think it's any more dangerous than leaving your refrigerator on considering it is basically the same mechanism. I know a lot of people don't want to leave an oven or slow cooker on, but a lot do. I think a dryer fire would be a much greater risk with a gas dryer. However, even then, if you keep the lint screen, exhaust hose, etc. clean, it shouldn't be a problem. When I bought my house, I blew the dryer vent pipe out with compressed air. I wish I had video taped it. Tons of lint went everywhere. Blockages like that, combined with an open flame, must pose some level of risk.
