We just had a small lakehouse demolished and removed. Approximately 700 sf was raised (on crawl space) and about 500 sf on slab. The cost was $4,000.00. We're in Alabama. An option that the City inspector mentioned when we were inquiring about getting the demo permit was a controlled burn. Seems the local fire department will do them for free (as a training exercise) but we would have still had to contract out the disposal of the debris. We opted not to go that route since a we had some trees (one in particular a magnificent oak) that we didn't want harmed.

Yes, they're an IRS-recognized charity. We don't have a tax accountant or advisor, though, and I imagine it would cost more to get one than it would to just leave this out all together. The way their kitchen demo program works is that you pay them for the demo and they salvage and take away anything that can be reused, and send you a receipt for it for tax purposes. We had a more complicated demo than many, so some of the work they did didn't result in anything salvageable (e.g., pulling up old ceramic flooring). And I imagine some of the fee is for the cost of carting away and disposing of the things they can't salvage. Just don't know how you split it up! (When my husband donated his car years back, he got a receipt that listed the blue book value and just used that, but cabinets don't really work that way...) I guess I'll have to call them to find out. Just wondered if this was standard practice and I was supposed to know what to do with it!

We're general contracting ourselves, also...and during the demolition I was there, watching like a hawk over everything. And supervising every last bit of drywall and wall framing that was removed. Basically, you have to do what a GC would have done anyways...hire good people, and watch them carefully.

The material is vinyl asbestos tile. The danger will be to your child. You can cover it up or have it professionally removed. I find it odd that the floor cannot be saved but I doubt it is worth saving unless it is quarter sawn oak ... It is probably clear fir and too soft for the surface to not be damaged.
