Help me hide neighbors yard, please.
Comments (20)Without doubt, I would go with Vetiver Grass "Vetiveria zizanioides". "Vetiver is a clumping type grass, non-invasive. The roots are very deep, so it's best to decide carefully where to plant it because it is very hard to dig up. It can be grown in a container as well, for a lovely effect. In 1989 Fort Polk in Louisiana was having a problem with erosion. Three scenic streams came together on the base, but tanks and other military equipment was ripping up the land and causing soil and silt to fill up the natural waterways. Mike Materne, the local U.S. Soil Conservation Service agent, brought in some vetiver plants and planted them in the bare slopes above the dams that held runoff water. In spite of the very acidic, rocky soil that contained virtually no fertility, the slips of grass began to grow. In eight weeks, some were almost 2 meters tall and in 10 weeks they had grown together into hedges. Sediment began to build up behind the hedges and the water that went down the streams into the catch ponds became clear. It soon became clear that vetiver was acting as much more than an erosion trap: it was a "nurse plant" that was protecting other species and thereby giving these devastated watersheds a chance to heal themselves. Native grasses, wildflowers, shrubs, trees and vines came crowding in behind the hedges and grew to re-vegetate the site."...See MoreMy neighbor from h*** cost me ANOTHER contract
Comments (81)I was perusing my kane county illinois codes and I came across this and thought of this post. Maybe your area has a similar ordinance you can trump up to solve your problems: Codes: (8) a. Notwithstanding any other provision of this code, to operate or permit operation of any sound amplification system in a vehicle or on property, or to perform lawn mowing or utilize power or nonpower tools, or to operate off road vehicles, including, but not limited to, off highway motorcycles, minibikes, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles or other like or similar vehicles, on private property where the noise from such vehicle or activity is such as to unreasonably disturb, injure or endanger the comfort, repose, health, peace or safety of reasonable persons of ordinary sensitivity; and when after written or verbal warning from law enforcement personnel the owner or operator fails to cease and desist from such operation or activity. The terms "motorcycles", "off road motorcycles", and "all-terrain vehicles" shall have the same meaning as in the Illinois motor vehicle code. "Snowmobile" shall have the same meaning as in the snowmobile registration and safety act. b. To make, continue, create or cause to be made or continued any loud or raucous noise. c. To make, continue, create or cause to be made or continued any noise which is harsh, prolonged, unnatural, or unusual in time or place as to occasion unreasonable discomfort to any persons within the neighborhood from which the noise emanates or as to unreasonably interfere with the peace and comfort of neighbors or their guests or operators or customers in places of business, or as to detrimentally or adversely affect such residences or places of business. d. Factors for determining whether a sound is unreasonably loud or raucous may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. The proximity of the sound to sleeping facilities, whether residential or commercial; 2. The land use, nature and zoning of the area from which the sound emanates and the area where it is received or perceived; 3. The time of day the sound occurs; 4. The duration of the sound; 5. Whether the sound is recurrent, intermittent, or constant; 6. Any violation of section 12-602 of the Illinois motor vehicle code; 7. Removal or modification of adequate sound suppression equipment as set forth in section 4-1(E) of the snowmobile registration and safety act....See MoreDilemma: what trees for narrow space between my house and neighbor's?
Comments (19)This might have been mentioned. (I didn't read everything.) If you had a groundcover below the trees, there stands a good chance that many leaves would disappear into it as they sift down, and then just convert to "mulch" over time. I don't think it looks good to have shrubs below the trees as it seems everything is competing visually with everything else. It could either be a tree form with groundcover below, or a shrub form that is allowed to cover all the ground space. Whatever plant (tree or shrub) you pick, if it's reasonably narrow, I wouldn't worry about some if it crossing the property line as that's just the way life is with limited space yards. It happens everywhere. The neighbor has the right to cut back to the property line. Also, I wouldn't worry that a plant is labeled necessarily as "tree" or "shrub". For small trees and large shrubs this is a massive "grey area." Many plants can fit either category depending on how you prune them....See MoreHelp me cozy up my living room
Comments (10)IMO Usually, a mirror is good only if it reflects something interesting. In this case, it does not. Much better choice might be a large plant or a large peice of art (the same size as the current mirror). A rug is welcome in this space. Pick a color for your pillows, art https://www.art.com/products/p22110758584-sa-i7605371/camille-pissarro-the-tow-path-at-bougival-1864.htm?upi=PL93ZD0&PODConfigID=8880734 (get the print and then get it framed locally), and rug https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Copper-Grove-Meghri-Area-Rug/26414929/product.html?kwds=&option=44376945&refccid=B7D6ITLIFAVYK7CN4TV42A4FTI&rfmt=color%3AGreen%7Crug%20size%3A10%27%20x%2014%27%7Cstyle%3ACasual&searchidx=11. I agree that this space suffers from an overload of beiges. Also, I'd like to make a comment about the lighting. In this type of room, a ceiling light is not the best. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Please put the ceiling light on a dimmer, if you must use it....See Moreshivece
