Kraftmaid - from dealer vs. Lowes - is there a difference?
Comments (17)Thanks so much for all of your replies. On the advice of kompy (thank you very much!), we did find a local dealer and we are working with them. Comparing apples to apples to all the cabs and design that Lowe's priced, they are about 8% more, BUT they also pointed out several flaws in the Lowe's design, such as how the molding they had stacked on top of the pantry would actually protude ever so slightly out from the wall, how one of the doors would not open all the way without binding and how the fridge & cabinets around it wouldn't allow the fridge doors to fully open! I definitely would not have been happy with that and I wouldn't have realized it until too late when everything was installed! They have also suggested some small design changes that I think really makes the whole layout better. And they are able to get items from Kraftmaid like wainscot panels for the island instead of sticking doors on it - which I think looks really nice! We haven't ordered yet, but I am very happy so far with the local dealer. Even though they are a bit more expensive, I think the expertise in kitchen layouts and the time they have spent with us going over everything is definitely worth it. billp1 - wow, that's a leap of faith ordering online from Kentucky and you're in NY! So glad everything went smoothly for you. bbell - I agree about the dealer making design suggestions and what to do or not to do. Just some small tweaks to the Lowe's design that were suggested by the dealer I think really has made the layout better (and actually, when we went into Lowe's we knew the basic design of what we wanted and they plugged in the measurements and cabinets, etc that fit in our measurements). And I do like that if there are any issues, then the dealer is the middle man to deal with Kraftmaid. Luckily I think we have found a local dealer who really cares about his clients and wants them to be happy with their new kitchen. He has been out to our house twice within the past week to take measurements, to demonstrate to us some of the issues w/ the Lowe's design and show us drawings with some design ideas. RICSFAN - we are planning to get cherry peppercorn too in the Montclair door style. What door style did you get? Are your cabinets installed yet? I would love to see pictures....See MoreQuestion about white kitchens and cabinet brands
Comments (13)If you have a layout and size plan you can get an estimate from Chad at cabinetmakerschoice.com. I do not think you will be able to get both inset and white painted in the $8,000 to $10,000 range but you could possibly get beautiful all wood inset cabinetry in their higher-end line (craftsman) with blum hardware and paint the cabinets yourself. This all depends of course on the size of your kitchen & door pick. Perhaps you could do inset on the top and full overlay on the bottom with same door style? I just ordered my cabinets from the above place; I had been looking at mid priced cabinets like Medallion and SchulerÂs (sp?) from Lowes. I am spending a little bit over half of what the other estimates came in at which is a huge savings. We ordered our all wood cabinets (other cabs were not all wood) with the wall cabÂs painted maple and the base cabinets Cherry with stain plus a glaze and also have an extra line of 18" wall cabinets stacked above the 36" wall cabÂs, pot drawers w/3/4 thick bottoms, trim, light rails moldings, pull out spice cabs ect total 19 cabinets but two are without doors for display. With shipping we came in at a smidge over 8 grand and that included some odd sizes we needed. My cabinets are not inset though, they are full overlay and my kitchen is not that big....See MoreKemper vs Bertch
Comments (4)Kemper is a division of Masterbrand (makers of Diamond, Aristokraft, Schrock, etc) and most of the stuff for all the brands rolls out of the same factories. Diamond (I deal in Diamond and Bertch) is running a smoking deal right now on APC and also the finishes like Amaretto Creme. While I think the quality is probably the same for Bertch Legacy and Diamond Distinction, I get a different feeling dealing with the two companies. You can tell Bertch is still family owned; there are almost warm fuzzies talking with dealer support staff. I haven't got that feeling from Diamond, but I also don't talk to them so much. While I know the doors are the same (but with different names) in Diamond and Kemper, I'm not sure about the boxes. Is it possible to look at the exact kind of cabinet you're getting in either line? All plywood, an example of an authentic end (if you're getting any), finished intertior? Something you can lift the countertop off of to look at the innards? Bertch is also running a deal, now that I think on it. Free soft close drawers. Right now though, whenever I quote two kitchens (one in diamond, one in bertch) the diamond one is winning, especially with solid color finishes....See MoreRanking semi-custom kitchen cabinets
Comments (85)Self cleaning ovens generate a great deal of heat. Heat can and will scorch wood, mdf, and paint. To prevent that heat from building up, it is recommended to open the doors and drawers adjacent to an oven while it is in the self cleaning cycle. If you don't and your cabinets scorch, yes, that is abuse and would not be covered under warrant. By any cabinet company. Wood expands and contracts over the seasonal moisture cycle. Just as you will get a gap in your crown molding in winter because it's dry, and a door will stick in summer because it's moist, cabinets will do the same thing. Although top coatings are meant to have a certain amount of flex to them, they do not have enough flex to not get hairline breaks in the finish where you have two pieces lf wood joining. That is 100% normal. You cannot expect wood to not behave like wood. This is normal. Cabinets do get wet occasionally, yes. But you are expected to not let them stay that way. You are expected to dry them, as part of a normal care routine just as you would any other furniture in your home. And you are expected to not constantly slop water onto the cabinet below the sink base, and to teach your children to do the same. And not let the dog jump on them and scratch them with his nails. That is not normal wear and tear. That IS abuse that will result in guaranteed damage that will not be covered by any cabinet warranty. If you feel that you cannot properly care for your kitchen furniture investment, then there are cabinets that will stand up to a more continual water presence and searing heat. You find them in commercial kitchens everywhere. They are stainless steel....See Morefelizlady
