placing art behind sofa help???!!??
Comments (26)Exactly! the very center (i.e.: of the big imaginary square) will be half way between the left pics and the right one, next to the split between the two pics on the left. That is your center. And you want pics lower rather than higher on walls, slightly below center (between sofa top and crown moulding, if you have it, or where the ceiling meets the wall. If you don't care for that arrangement, which it seems you don't, what you might want to do is get some masking tape, actually create, to scale, the imaginary square on the wall (which gives you all the right scale and dimensions as they relate to wall size and height with the sofa back), then transfer the tape square to a floor, and try different arrangements. I also think if you have more of those pics, you should use them. It's a good-size space behind your sofa....See MoreMirrors Above Sofa or Should I Forget About this Idea?
Comments (42)As someone with a home that also has a lot of big white walls to fill, please do take your time with this. I know it's tempting to just fill the walls with anything. But patience pays off. We've found it helpful to work with a local art gallery. They pick out art they think will work for our space and our budget, and loan it to us so we can "try it on for size" for awhile. Or if you're more creatively inclined check out toats' threads -- and make your own art!...See MoreUpdate on 70s rock fireplace........now what?
Comments (8)I agree with trimming the mantel length just a bit, maybe 12" each end. Currently it cuts the FP in half. It would visually flow with shorter mantel. What about a pair of light wood or cream (or light to medium green) painted chests on either side, with mismatched but similar lamps and artwork above. Artwork can be large pieces, or one large piece and other side stacked, or both stacked. Depends on how uniformed you like your spaces. I like more fluid spaces....See MoreLooking for ideas for family room with black leather sofa and mirror
Comments (21)Youu can find many resources online explaining placement of mirrors/art and how to balance a space, here is one https://homeguides.sfgate.com/tips-hanging-mirror-over-furniture-100546.html It will help you understand why you felt the space is not cozy or lacking. Essentially that mirror is too small in relation to the size of the couch and just hanging it by itself will not be enough, you will need to add more items to the arrangement. If the mirrror is centered you have no choice but to add left and right of it which makes the arrangement too busy. Further to complicate things it is hung too high so even when you added the other items still doesnt look right. The right thing to do is move the mirror to a side and lower and add something else on the other side to balance it. Or fill in the space bellow it and to the side with items on a shelf. Many times clients notice something is not quite perfect and request help. Much like going to the doctor with your symptoms, it takes a trained eye to diagnose the problem and find a solution. That being said I believe it is very important to also explain to the client the reasoning behind it, hence my above explanation...haha...See MoreBethpen
