The Wall Behind Your Sofa.....
Comments (34)Our upstairs living room (now the dining room) had a gianormous elaborately framed mirror, and two oblong matted pictures. Downstairs (above a shelf that is at about half height and goes all the way around the room), we have a sculpted wood tree with burnished metal leaves. There are also matching metal cut-out stars and a moon placed here and there on the wall. I love both, but the pictures would have needed updating (if we hadn't converted it to a dining room). The colours are slightly outdated, and feature hummingbirds and flowers. I've moved to victorian flowers. I still adore the wood/metal tree though. Comments (51)"By the way, the conversation pit made it easier to pass around the peace pipe, if you know what I mean." Ah, that makes sense. I guess I never thought about that specific activity. "Conversation pits were popular because people actually had conversations. No computers, no cell phones, no texting. You actually looked people in the eye and talked." I do understand that the 1970s were certainly a social era. Perhaps I'm out of touch with the generations younger than me, but I'm fairly certain people still have conversations. I absolutely understand making a seating area just for conversations. But what I'm wondering is: why a pit? Why not just a circular or semi-circular seating arrangement? Did it make the room feel more open? Make the conversation area feel more intimate? I've never been in one and have always wondered what drew people to the idea of a pit....See MoreMirrors Above Sofa or Should I Forget About this Idea?
Comments (42)As someone with a home that also has a lot of big white walls to fill, please do take your time with this. I know it's tempting to just fill the walls with anything. But patience pays off. We've found it helpful to work with a local art gallery. They pick out art they think will work for our space and our budget, and loan it to us so we can "try it on for size" for awhile. Or if you're more creatively inclined check out toats' threads -- and make your own art!...See MoreLooking for ideas for family room with black leather sofa and mirror
Comments (21)Youu can find many resources online explaining placement of mirrors/art and how to balance a space, here is one https://homeguides.sfgate.com/tips-hanging-mirror-over-furniture-100546.html It will help you understand why you felt the space is not cozy or lacking. Essentially that mirror is too small in relation to the size of the couch and just hanging it by itself will not be enough, you will need to add more items to the arrangement. If the mirrror is centered you have no choice but to add left and right of it which makes the arrangement too busy. Further to complicate things it is hung too high so even when you added the other items still doesnt look right. The right thing to do is move the mirror to a side and lower and add something else on the other side to balance it. Or fill in the space bellow it and to the side with items on a shelf. Many times clients notice something is not quite perfect and request help. Much like going to the doctor with your symptoms, it takes a trained eye to diagnose the problem and find a solution. That being said I believe it is very important to also explain to the client the reasoning behind it, hence my above explanation...haha...See MoreRelated Professionals
