I have been able to co-exist and garden in harmony with the chipmunks in the rural area we live in Connecticut. But it seems over the last 2 years or so the chipmunks have taken advantage of any prior agreement we had ... when they started to tear up planters on a second floor bedroom deck that changfed things, but last week when i found one digging in a potted plant in our screened in porch that was the last straw! They were no longer cute, they were vermin over running our property. Checked out this site (as well as many others) for a solution. And the bucket (with the sunflower seeds) has worked, even thougfh I was sceptical at first. Better yet I may have found a solution to the squirrel intrusion problem (squirrels leaning into the bucket and scoping out seeds) ... instead of placing a board up to the bucket that serves as a diving board for the chipmunks, cover the bucket with a board that has a hole (approx 3"x3") just big enough for a chipmunk but too small for a squirrel. It worked for me! Bagged a chipmunk in first day. And there's no way a squirrel could get to the seeds.

I posted early (curtisshops - March 18th) with a photo of the damage the chipmunks were doing to my vehicles. Not only is it a fire hazard, it cost me $600 to totally dismantle the HVAC unit and clean out their nests (and a couple that died in there.) I have been using have a heart traps, but lately the munks get in and eat the peanut stuck down with peanut butter and leave w/o springing the trap they are so light, so my catch rate keeps falling and falling. I finally resorted to a rat zapper, several brands available to look at on Amazon, or wherever, and it is working! Photo is my 4th kill in 2 weeks. With lots of voltage, it is pretty much instant numbing and clean kill, notice the rigidity, spares you and the animal the drowning routine. I think I may have found the best option for us living as remote as we do, even more humane than a cat. I love the wildlife that we share with out here, and have 100's of chipmunks and lots of other critters on the ranch, they are incredible breeders, but I just need them to stay back a couple hundred feet away from the house and vehicles and not do damage. I'm ordering a couple more units for around our compound.

Maine, I believe, is one of the states that require a state license to move wildlife. The fines for failing to obtain one can be quite heavy.

Nice dog Bob! I’ll keep you guys updated. I put out two snap traps in boxes this afternoon. I checked one a bit ago and the annoying critters had taken some of the peanut butter off one...no snap though! That’s ok...there was a little left and they’ll have to work harder to get it...I hope to have something tomorrow. Just now I was out one last time taking my dogs to pee when Enzo (the big fluffy one) starts sprinting across the yard. Next thing I know there is a large animal (raccoon??? Fox??) zipping past me with Lila (the Aussie) in hot pursuit. I screamed and ended up on the patio table! Lol. I hope my neighbors did not see that show!
