How can i get rid of chipmunks?
Comments (22)I have been able to live and garden in harmony with the chipmunks in the rural area we live in Connecticut. But it seems over the last 2 years or so the chipmunks have taken advantage of any prior agreement we had, getting more and more emboldened. This year when they started to tear up planters in a screened-in porch I became alarmed but when they undermined a sidewalk and a retaining wall that was it. The mason performing the repair work uncovered a munk burrow that ran about 10 feet and almost a foot high, cleanly excavated. They are no longer cute, they are vermin over running our property, and not only costing serious money for repairs but they're creating a hazard as well. Like many on this thread I too felt guilty about eliminating chipmunks ... but have become increasingly frustrated and desperate when the population exploded and over ran our property and garden areas. Destructive, brazen and invasive is ALL an understatement when I see what these cute little critters have become. While I feel I need to eliminate them I want to do it as humanely as possible, and since it is illegal to relocate them in the state of CT, the Hav-A-Heart trap presents the dilemma of having to "off them" yourself and watch them die. I think I have solved the problem ... the RAT ZAPPER. An animal control professional I spoke to (off the record) indicated that "electrocution" is the fastest, most humane and cleanest way to do what has to be done. I bought my first "zapper" and eliminated 21 munks in approximately 10 days. Since then I bought 2 more and now there are almost 50 critters that no longer make their home in the area around my foundation, sidewalks and retaining walls. Granted the "pool of death" (the bucket) does work, but this is cleaner, more convenient ... no bucket to maintain/seed to replenish. I place a little pile of sunflower seed at the back of the chamber and flip the switch. And location seems to be important. Under shrubs and near visible, active holes seems to be most effective. Interestingly, an Ohio State University critter/pest management site I visited indicated that 10 chipmunks or more per acre is considered an infestation population. I have caught almost five times that number, so I assume I am dealing with nature being way out of balance, at least as far as the chipmunk population. If you're getting more and desperate, try the Zapper, it works....See Morechipmunks
Comments (16)We have had problems at times with chipmunks, squirrels, and neighbourhood cats getting into our veg. garden. We found a reasonable solution using what is sold as deer protection. I included a link to the product we used. We found the netting, folded to be about 4 ft. tall, and attached to fence posts works well if it is not pulled tight. We leave a few inches which we turn and anchor at ground level. The squirrels and cats can't get a good hold to climb, the chipmunks get tangled up trying to dig under and this seems to have deterred them. I saw a chipmunk attempt to dig under and it got hung up in the netting and was having such a fit trying to get loose that I thought I would have to go and try to set it free. If I step on the netting at the ground level, I can get tangled up in it and have to be careful about tripping. It seems to stick like glue to my shoes. You mention you already have chicken wire fencing for rabbits. Perhaps you could install the netting inside your fence to see if it works for you. I suppose you need to get rid of the chipmunks that already have dens under your cross ties first. if you use the search engine for the entire garden web site, and search on "Pool of Death" or chipmunk control, you will find some useful entries on how to control (kill) chipmunks around the house/gardens. Comments (4)I use Milorganite on my lawn and even spread it throughout my beds, and I have chipmunks galore. They have a big den under my deck, but I see them disappearing into other areas, too. I don't know if the tunnels all lead to the deck or not. So if Milorganite repels chippies in theory, where would they go? Would they actually leave their home? Or do you just mean they will leave the plants alone? I rarely see plant damage, but they've done a number on my front cement stoop. It's sinking and I see the little devils going in and out of the hole that's formed. So I've been using rat traps, but not having much luck this year with them. They must be getting smarter. I tried the bucket of death method last year...messy and it works...but I stopped when one poster witnessed it taking almost two hours of torture before it finally drowned. I can't stomach that, so scratch that idea. My next try is going to be the Rat Zapper. I think that's the name of it, it's the battery operated one that is reusable. So with the trap method, no butterflies are harmed....See MoreHow to get rid one smart chipmunk
Comments (9)Ok. He got another one of my Schar Italian figs. He was 7 feet from me laying spread out in my 3 gallon fig just having a ball. I crack the door open and took a shot at him and I know I got him. He ran off injured with a hole in him thru and thru. The pellet went straight through my plant container too! He won't be back but just in case his brother comes by, I placed a Havahart trap out on my deck baited with one ripe fig. If I catch him, he won't live to see another day! Al,Eve recommended the same trap. I'm going to try it this afternoon after I pick up some sunflower seeds. I hope it works. Again, I've lost too many figs to these guys and its not funny. Thanks everyone! Dennis...See Morerhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7
